DHHS—U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Federal agency that provides for effective health and human services and fosters advances in medicine,
public health, and social services.
CMS—Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP—Children’s
Health Insurance Program [1997, to insure children in families with too much income to qualify
for Medicaid and too little to afford private insurance], HIM—Health Insurance Marketplace,
administered by CCIIO—Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, CMMI—
Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation)
CDC—Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
Infectious diseases—recent investigations (JEM Raw Brand Nut Butter Spreads –

FDA proposes extending its authority to cover additional products that meet the
definition of a tobacco product under the proposed rule: Tobacco Products Deemed To
Be Subject to the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act (Deeming). Currently FDA regulates
cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco. Proposed
newly “deemed” products would include electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco,
certain dissolvables that are not “smokeless tobacco,” gels, and waterpipe tobacco.

PPACA—Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010) (This and the Health Care and Education
Reconciliation Act are known as Obamacare) 1. Increase availability and affordability of health care
coverage in public and private sectors through subsidies, mandates, protections for patients including
guaranteed issue
EMTALA—Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (1986) ensure public access to
emergency services regardless of ability to pay
Imposes specific obligations on Medicare-participating hospitals that offer emergency services
to provide a medical screening examination (MSE) when a request is made for examination or
treatment for an emergency medical condition (EMC), including active labor, regardless of an
individual's ability to pay. Hospitals are then required to provide stabilizing treatment.
