The Periodic Table
This project will have you investigate the periodic table. You will identify elements, learn how the periodic
table was originally discovered and explain how the table is organised.
TASK: Complete the worksheets, questions and posters, then the self assessment on the Gold sheet at the
back of this hand out.

Who was Newland and what was his original theory on the Elements?
What is the accepted table now, and who discovered and proposed it?
Extension:
 Why is this the accepted way now?
 Why is the table called the Periodic Table?
 How did Mendelev solve the early problems of the arrangement of the elements?
How is his periodic table arranged now?
Extension:
 How are the elements organised in the periodic table?
 What does the Periodic table look like now? Complete the blank table on the next
page using the Internet (or your planner) to help.
6
Extension:
 Complete the numbers for the elements in the boxes.
 What is a period? What do the numbers mean?
7
Extension:
 Using any element as an example, draw a box and explain what the different parts
of the box mean (Atomic Mass and Number)
 Label the atom on the following page, using the internet to help you.
9
Extension:
 Explain the charge of each part of the atom (electron, neutron, proton) on your
diagram.
 Explain what an atom, element, compound and mixture is. How can they be
organised?
 What is the first group of elements called?
10
Extension:
 List the elements in order of reactivity
 What are the trends in this group?

The Groups
Task


Extension:
 What are the properties of these elements? What makes them so special?
11

What is the seventh group of elemets called?
12
Extension:
 List the elements in order of reactivity
 What are the trends in this group?
13
Extension:
 What are the properties of these elements? What makes them so special?
 What is the eighth group of elements called?
14
Extension:
 List the elements in order of reactivity
 What are the trends in this group?
15
Extension:
 What are the properties of these elements? What makes them so special?
 Pick an element from the Periodic Table. Think of one that other people might not.
Make a poster outlining the element and its properties.

Make sure you explain its uses, properties, atomic number, symbol and history and
discovery.
