Exercise for Persons with Disabilities (ExPD) exercise programs or opportunities to participate in an active lifestyle. Based at Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care Cambridge, the goal of the new Exercise for Persons with Disabilities (ExPD) program is to provide suitable exercise activities for health, leisure and sport for people with disabilities. There is ample evidence that exercise can result in health However, exercise must be appropriate to each population to address their unique needs in order to induce optimal health introducing a new innovative form of exercise, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)-Rowing. FES is a technology that allows weakened or paralyzed muscles to contribute to whole body exercise. In this way both the legs and arms are under voluntary control and higher exercise intensities can be reached and sustained. In fact, some FES-rowers have achieved unprecedented work rates comparable to those of able-bodied rowers. Requirements To be in this program you must be at least 18 years of age. You must be able to follow simple directions and be able to reach a certain amount of range of motion in your leg joints (ankles, knees and hips). You will also need to be able to move your arms to participate and should have a good response to electrical stimulation of your thigh muscles. The physician must also agree that you’re healthy enough to participate in this form of exercise and may require you to get additional tests to determine if you are eligible. Cost for the program is: $60 Medical Health Screen for participation clearance (one time expense) $50 Electrical Stimulator rental per month $100 Exercise fees per month.
