Position Statement on Tramadol modified-release (M/R) (Marol®)
HVCCG recommends Tramadol M/R tablets/capsules (12 HOURLY)
to be prescribed as Marol® M/R tabs
Recommendations
 Tramadol M/R capsules/tablets should be prescribed as Marol® tablets.
 Tramadol M/R should only be considered second line for those patients in whom
immediate release is not appropriate.
 Practices should consider switching patients currently prescribed other brands of
Tramadol MR 100mg, 150mg and 200mg (including generic) to Marol®.
 There is currently no 50mg strength of Marol®. Zydol® SR 50mg tablets are currently
the most cost effective preparation.1
 Practices should be aware that there are 12 hourly and 24 hour release formulations of
tramadol MR. The following brands are 24 hour release and should only be switched if
the dose is to be altered:



Zydol XL®
Zamadol 24 hour®
Tradorec®
Rationale
 Marol® is the most cost effective preparation of tramadol M/R for the strengths listed
below.
