Person Specification – Infrastructure Engineer (Networks)
Job Purpose
The role holder will be responsible for managing IT systems on and off premise as well as
supporting the delivery of software and infrastructure development projects.
You will be expected to work with minimal supervision and will act as a lead technical engineer
specialising in Networks on a range of change and support activities.
Key Responsibilities

Works as part of a team with no supervision as a noted expert with a wide range of systems or indepth knowledge helping to define and implement technical best practice. Ensures effective planning
and implementation of creative and innovative service changes.
Leads technical implementation of small and medium infrastructure change. Contributing to the
delivery of large infrastructure change and technical designs, including the identification of risks.
Working within a technical framework of the Project to meet customer requirements
Takes a technical lead, promoting knowledge sharing and development of other team members both
inside and outside of the group. Supports and stands in for the team leader as necessary.
Manages systems within OLA/SLA’s, proposing/defining improvements and implementing changes to
meet service level requirements. Monitors performance through statistical reporting and analysis
Contributes to the definition of operational processes, (both internal and external) and deals with
customer escalated problems. Contributes to the development of DVLA’s Infrastructure community.
Establishes working relationships with the customer and relevant operational units, at the appropriate
technical and/or management level, to understand the requirements of the customer’s business in
order to deliver and enhance the service.
Takes ownership for obtaining the information required to diagnose and resolve complex problems.
Engages with third parties/vendors to jointly resolve in-depth product issues where necessary.
Proactively analyses information and trends, proposing action to resolve problems, maintaining and
enhancing service.
Stays up to date with new products, tools and techniques, encouraging their use within the business
to promote continuous improvement of capability.
Be available to (1) on a rota basis to undertake out of hours activities and provide on call cover to
support delivery of the service or (2) work within a shift system covering 24 hours per day 7 days a
week. A Shift allowance of 35% is applicable as cover for the 24/7 service and an example shift
pattern is available on request

Essential Criteria – Qualifications & Experience
You will have significant professional experience, relating to:
(1) Delivering and supporting (data or voice) network technologies using vendors such as:


Juniper/Avaya/Nortel/Cisco enterprise class switching
F5 or similar load balancing/WAF/DDOS solutions
Wide Area Network Technologies and Vendor solutions (such as the following routing
protocols – BGP, MPLS, OSPF, RIP Version 2)
and/or
(2) Delivering and supporting firewall technologies using vendors such as:
Checkpoint (Linux experience desirable), Juniper or similar firewalls solutions





Wide Area Network Technologies and vendor solutions
Experience in connectivity to and within Cloud technology solutions/providers
Experience of managing enterprise class monitoring solutions such as - Spectrum, ZenOss,
Clearswift, Cisco Ironports, McAfee IDS/IPS and LogRhythm
ServiceNow or similar solutions
Configuring and delivering highly availability solutions within the cloud
You should be certified or be able to demonstrate appropriate level of experience in leading network
activities in two of the following vendors: Cisco, Juniper, F5, Checkpoint, Nortel, Avaya.
