Gifted Qualification and Services Determination
TASK AND ANSWER DOCUMENT
Gifted Qualification and Services Determination
TASK
You have been assigned as the lead for a data team that focuses on Gifted Services qualification and
services. Part of your team’s job is to determine appropriated services for students based on their gifted
evaluation data. This includes determining the student’s differentiation needs, even if s/he does not
qualify for gifted program services.
Using the state and local manuals as a guide, determine if each of these students qualifies for gifted
services. Determine relative strengths and weaknesses as indicated by assessment results, then make
suggestions as to services and/or differentiation that would benefit the student.
For each example, respond to the following items on your answer document.
A. Does this student qualify? If yes, Option A or Option B? Why did you choose that Option? If no, why
not?
B. Describe this student’s strengths.
C. Describe any weaknesses or areas of concern.
D. Explain services and/or differentiation areas you would recommend for this student.
E. Meet with your school-based mentor (Gifted lead or designee) to discuss your decisions. Write a
summary of your discussion at the end of your answer document. This summary will also be included in
your Field Experience documentation.
Using the state and local manuals as a guide, determine if each of these students qualifies for gifted
services. Determine relative strengths and weaknesses as indicated by assessment results, then make

For each example, respond to the following items.

This student almost meets the requirements for
Option B. I believe once the student is
reevaluated, perhaps with Renzulli’s Motivation
Scale, they would fully qualify.
I chose this option because the students didn’t
score in the 99th percentile for mental ability but
did qualify for the mental ability for Option B. In
addition they did score in the 90th percentile for
the Total Reading. Their motivation scores are
B. Describe this student’s strengths.
C. Describe any weaknesses or areas of concern.
D. Explain services and/or differentiation areas
you would recommend for this student.

low and they just hit the minimum score for
creativity.
The student’s strengths would be reading and
perhaps artistic creativity.
The student show no signs of weakness. Their
either almost reach the minimum score ore meet
the minimum score for gifted capabilities.
I would maybe offer more visual aids to help with
mathematics and allow students to be creative
with language. This will help them improve in
mathematics and to grow in their reading
comprehension capabilities.

This student qualifies based off of their scores.
The student scored in the 99th percentile on the
composite test for Mental ability and in the 90th
percentile for Reading comprehension on the
Iowa. Based off of these results the student
qualifies for Option A.
This student is very bright in all areas of their
cognitive abilities.
This students is not very motivated. They may
need assistance finding a topic that will interest
them to help continue to learn so they do not
lose their capabilities.
I would allow the student to experiment with
classes and activities that they may enjoy. This
will help them to discover what they will enjoy
and then the teacher/ parents can use ideas from
that to help boost the student’s motivation and
creativity. Once the student finds an interest in a
topic they will wish to focus on it to learn more
and to improve.

In my opinion this student would not qualify.
Their scores on the CogAT do not meet the
standards for Option A nor Option B. Although
their score on the reading comprehension of the
Iowa achievement test, to me this just shows the
student is an accelerated reader.
This student is a strong reader and this is also
exhibited in their verbal skills with them scoring
in the 96th percentile on the verbal portion.
This student would be considered average based
off of some of their scores but above average in
mathematics. Areas that they would need
assistance would be motivation. I would help the
student to find an area of school or
extracurricular that they could express
themselves and motivate them to reach high
goals. This concept could also then trickle down
to other areas of their life.
I would suggest extra help in math and continued
encouragement in other areas.

This student does not qualify for gifted.
Although their mental ability is in the 96th
percentile, their achievement, creative, and
motivation scores are low for them to qualify.
His creative skills are above average which is an
advantage.
This student scores high marks in mental
capabilities. They may be very verbal with
expressing their ideas and opinions. In my
opinion this student has “street smarts” but is
average in math and reading.
This student lacks motivation.
I would suggest placing this student on a 504
where he can get support and encouragement
during school hours to help him to succeed.

Based off of the CogAT scores this student Is
above average in achievement but scored high in
the NNAT. The fact that his verbal scores were
lower than the rest for the CogAT but high for a
non-verbal assessment indicate that this student
has difficulty with verbal skills.
With the student scoring in the 92nd percentile
for the CogAT and then in the 96th percentile for
the NNAT for a reassessment this student
qualifies for the mental ability. In addition with
the student placing in the 94th percentile for the
math portion of the Iowa this student would
qualify for gifted under Option A.
This student specializes in math and quantitative
data.
This particular student, in my opinion, is a very
logic oriented student which is why his
motivation scores are so low.
Difficulty with verbal.
This student exhibits very little motivation.
Place the student in a 504 to help provide
extended opportunities to improve. Ideas may
include practice with speech and ways to
encourage motivation.
