The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is a national voluntary organisation devoted to representing the interests of, and providing services to, people with
Dementia, their families and carers. Marking its 30th Anniversary in 2012, The Society has grown to be a professional, nationwide charity which enjoys the
support of members, volunteers and over 900 staff through a network of over 125 Dementia specific services such as day care centres, home care
services, carer support groups, social clubs and two respite centres. The Society also operates the Alzheimer National Helpline Service 1 800 341 341.
Deputy Manager/CNM2
The Orchard Day & Respite Centre, Blackrock, Co. Dublin
The Deputy Manager will assist, support and deputise where required for the Director of Nursing. He/she will assist in the leadership of the staff team to
ensure provision of best practice, person centred dementia care to all service users in line with national standards and regulations. There is also a handson, nursing side to this role where the post holder will carry out and assume clinical responsibilities.
The successful candidate will have:
 A current registration with An Bord Altranais
 A minimum of 4 years nursing experience in a managerial role.
 Experience in elderly care.
 An understanding of the legislation governing services for older people and people with dementia including HIQA standards and regulations, and
their practical applications.

DEPUTY MANAGER/ CNM2
Location: Orchard Day
Blackrock, Co Dublin
and
Respite
Centre, Reports to: Director of Nursing
Responsible
for:
Care
staff,
Household, Hours: 39 hours per week
Maintenance and Driving Staff directly and any other
staff as directed by the Person in Charge.
Purpose of Position:
The Deputy Manager will assist, support and deputise where required for the Director of Nursing.
He/she will assist in the leadership of the staff team to ensure provision of best practice person centred
dementia care to all service users in line with National standards and regulations. The successful
candidate will understand and be able to carry out and assume the clinical responsibilities of the role.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Service Management and Development






To deputise for the Director of Nursing as required and directed.
To support the effective leadership of all staff in striving to achieve the mission and core values of
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland in the Orchard Day and Respite Centre.
To contribute to the development of policies, procedures, guidelines and team practice to ensure
that the service meets client’s needs in line with National standards and best practice as laid down
by HIQA and other Government Bodies.
Working with the Director of Nursing to identify and manage gaps in service provision and
opportunities for development within the service in line with The Society’s objectives.
To contribute to service planning.
To adhere to An Board Altranais professional standards including ‘Professional Guidance for
Nurses Working with Older People’ (An Bord Altranais 2009).
Team Participation & Leadership






To participate in team building and development to ensure that the Orchard provides an excellent
dementia care service that has the person with dementia at the centre.
To provide support and supervision to staff teams including care staff, household and catering staff
and volunteers and undertake regular performance and personal development appraisals as
directed.
To lead and record team meetings as required.
To participate in devising the staff roster as required.
To ensure that all new staff (paid and voluntary) receive appropriate induction to their roles and
work within the service, including knowledge of HIQA standards and the related policies,
procedures and guidelines as applied in The Orchard, to meet the needs of service users. In
particular to identify any shortcomings in the performance of new staff and report to the Director of
Nursing in a timely manner.
To contribute to the administration aspects of staff and volunteer training and undertake regular
training audits as directed.



To assist in promoting the volunteering concept within the service.
To strictly adhere to the policy of confidentiality and to help promote a culture of confidentiality
within the Centre.
Responsible for building relationships with staff.
Client Care













To lead allocated staff teams to ensure that person centred care is provided in line with best
practice dementia care, the Orchard policies and procedures, and in accordance with National
standards.
To be responsible for client referrals and discharges, including assessment of client and care
needs, ensure continuity of care for service users through the regular review of person centred care
plans; to oversee client centred activities and contribute to the promotion of the health and well
being of those attending the service.
To be responsible for Admissions into the Service.
To undertake person centred risk assessment and risk management as required.
To be vigilant at all times of clients in care and promote and instil a culture of vigilance amongst
staff.
To support the carers/family of clients attending the service as appropriate.
To assist the Manager in keeping all live policies, procedures and guidelines available to all staff
and contribute to staff induction and record keeping of same.
To contribute to the review and updating of relevant organisational policies procedures and
guidelines as required by the manager.
To record all notifable events and report to Manager in line with National Standards.
To participate in regular service reviews and audits and undertake audits as directed.
To maintain Health & Safety and Hygiene standards and enforce all related policies and procedures
in compliance with statutory requirements.
To carry out Nurse related duties on the floor as and when required.
Responsible for building relationships with clients.
Administration/ Financial Support

To record data and information on activities (including statistics and other relevant data) using the




current Management Information System’s in use by The Alzheimer Society (such as Salesforce)
as directed by the Manager.
To oversee maintenance and general care of the buildings, gardens and equipment as required.
To carry out all other administrative duties related to the role.
To assist in recording and reporting required financial information to the Regional and National
Office.
To assist in the promotion and management of fundraising activity.
Stakeholder and Public Representation and Promotion




To assist in the participation of service users (people with dementia, their carers/families) and to
take responsibility for Day Care attendances.
To work with and support the Person in Charge to maintain and develop good relationships with key
stakeholders such as the HSE as well as other donors.
To assist in identifying and promoting the services of the Orchard to suitable referral sources such
as local primary health care services and to promote service availability
To represent The Society at relevant seminars, conferences and fora regionally and nationally as
required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge/Experience:






A current registration with An Bord Altranais
A minimum of 4 years nursing experience in a managerial role.
Experience in elderly care.
An understanding of the legislation governing services for older people and people with dementia
including HIQA standards and regulations, and their practical applications.
An understanding of dementia including current best practice person centred dementia care, the
issues facing people living with Dementia and their carers/families.
A management qualification is desirable but not essential

Dementia training is desirable but not essential
Skills/Competencies:






Strong leadership skills, able to motivate, lead and support a team in a service that aims for best
practice and innovation in dementia care
Strong Management Skills:
- Ability to supervise, manage and motivate a team of care and other staff
- Excellent organisational skills in the area of general administration, resource rostering etc.
- Financial awareness and ability to operate service within budget
- Ability to handle effectively challenging deadlines and multiple tasks
Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
Good influencing skills
Comprehensive understanding of the Irish health system and structures
Experienced computer user with strong MS office skills
Other Requirements:


There is a requirement to be on call out of hours, and if necessary cover relevant shifts as
required.
Three satisfactory references, satisfactory Garda vetting, satisfactory medical fitness
declaration, proof of registration and qualifications will be required.
