SICK CHILD POLICY
If a child should contract a non-serious communicable disease or infection eg. A cold,
conjunctivitis etc. he/she should remain at home until 24 hours after the infection has
cleared up.
In the case of infectious disease the pre-school must be informed by the parents and will
advise the other parents of incubation details and warning signs.
Should your child become unwell while at the centre, we will take the appropriate action
to make your child comfortable? We will advise you if we feel a doctors advice is
necessary. If your child is well enough to return after 24 hours we will give medication
that has been prescribed by the doctor and is clearly labelled.
In case of an extreme emergency we will call an ambulance. We will telephone you to
arrange for you either to arrive in time to meet at the centre or go directly to the hospital.
A member of staff would accompany your child if no parent or relative arrives in time.
We will keep parents informed of illnesses/infections at the centre by putting a notice in
the lobby.
The following are classified as infectious diseases:
Anthrax
Cholera
Diphtheria
Dysentery
Food poisoning
Hepatitis/jaundice
Leptospirosis
Meningitis or encephalitis
Poliomyelitis
Rabies
Tetanus
Tuberculosis
Typhoid or Paratyphoid Fever
The pre-school must report less serious communicable diseases on a weekly basis for the
purpose of surveillance to the Secretary of the Infectious Disease Clerk of Haringey
Environmental Health Department 02088081066 or to the Consultant in Communicable
Disease Control 0208 361 7272.
The following should also be reported promptly:
1.
An unusually large number of absences due to illness in a number of children
or staff, whether or not the cause is known.
2.
An increased incidence of vomiting and/or diarrhoea occurring either over a
short or an extended period.
3.
Several cases of a similar infection in children in the pre-school.
This policy was adopted at a meeting of Yeladenu Pre-School
