Methods of Mathematical Physics ECTS credits: 5 Realization: spring semester Course language: english Number of course hours with forms of teaching: lecture 30 hours. exercises 30 hours. Course type: obligatory Course objectives Passing on to students the basic knowledge on three branches of theoretical physics: classical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and the role of mathematics in theoretical physics. Contents of the course 1.Theoretical mechanics: Newton's laws of motion, equations of motion, conservation laws, description of simple physical systems (e.g. oscillator), description of the Solar System. Lagrange formalism. Canonical formalism. 2. Classical electrodynamics: notion of a field, sources of fields, Maxwell equations and their properties, invariance of Maxwell equations with respect to Lorentz transformations, special relativity. Electrostatics and magnetostatics. Electromagnetic induction. 3. Quantum mechanics: problems of classical physics as a source of quantum mechanics. Canonical quantization of classical systems, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, Schrödinger equation. Harmonic oscillator. Quantum theory of angular momentum. Structure of hydrogen atom. Periodic table of elements. Prerequisites (sequential system of courses and exams) Analytical Mechanics, Partial Differential Equations
