Number of course hours with forms of teaching: lecture 30 hours.
exercises 30 hours.
Course type: obligatory
Course objectives
Passing on to students the basic knowledge on three branches of
theoretical physics: classical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum
mechanics and the role of mathematics in theoretical physics.
Contents of the course
1.Theoretical mechanics: Newton's laws of motion, equations of motion,
conservation laws, description of simple physical systems (e.g.
oscillator), description of the Solar System. Lagrange formalism.
Canonical formalism. 2. Classical electrodynamics: notion of a field,
sources of fields, Maxwell equations and their properties, invariance of
Maxwell equations with respect to Lorentz transformations, special
relativity. Electrostatics and magnetostatics. Electromagnetic induction.
3. Quantum mechanics: problems of classical physics as a source of
quantum mechanics. Canonical quantization of classical systems,
Heisenberg uncertainty principle, Schrödinger equation. Harmonic
oscillator. Quantum theory of angular momentum. Structure of hydrogen
atom. Periodic table of elements.
Prerequisites (sequential system of courses and exams)
Analytical Mechanics, Partial Differential Equations
