Job Description

NURSE PRACTITIONER
Practice Manager
 The implementation of Health Promotion and Disease
Management strategies (in line with the National Service
Frameworks) provision of a full range of nursing services to
patients of the practice.
 Development/review and implementation of practice protocols
 Contribute professional expertise to the strategic planning and
management of the practice
MAIN DUTIES

Provision of nursing services for the practice population within the agreed practice
guidelines
General and specific health screening, including new patient checks and cervical
screening
To provide a point of contact within the practice for patients presenting with
undifferentiated, undiagnosed problems, making use of skills in history taking, physical
examination, problem-solving and clinical decision-making, to establish a diagnosis and
management plan or onward referral to a GP
To instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and
interpret findings/reports
To refer patients directly to other services/agencies as appropriate

Where the post holder is an independent prescriber:
 to prescribe safe, effective and appropriate medication as defined by the
current legislative framework
 to provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter
medication on medication regimens, possible side effects and interactions
 review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs
and in accordance with evidence based practice and practice and national
protocols
 work with patients in order to support adherence to prescribed treatments

Review and manage the programmes of care for patients with chronic disease working
effectively with other members of the practice team.

Undertake home visits and transportation of blood products.

Undertake immunisations, injections and vaccinations and travel advice.
Collect pathological specimens and perform investigatory procedures as required by the
General Practitioners (including venepuncture)
The maintenance of health promotion literature and information for patients.

The inputting of information onto the Practice clinical system and paper records
10.
Supervision, teaching/mentoring of nursing assistants and student nurses.
11.
Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the Practice.
12.
Participate in the Practice Audit and Research work
13.
Participate in team learning, education and training sessions
14.
Ensure that infection control procedures are followed.

Work safely at all times in accordance with Legislative requirements and Practice Policy
and Procedures.
To help develop and set up new working practices and clinics. Participate in initiatives to
improve exciting services and access to appointments.

knowledge and competence in all aspects of the role is maintained.
To produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation,
consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
To proactively promote the role of the NP and work collaboratively with colleagues
within and external to the practice.

This role profile should be regarded only as guidance to the duties required and it should
be recognised that the duties and responsibilities of the post may change or evolve over

holder should be prepared to take on additional duties, or relinquish existing duties in
order to maintain the efficient running of the practice.
