Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max):
The Altitude Research Group (www.ul.ie/altitude) seek to explore the physiological adaptation to
short-term and prolonged exposure to altitude (normobaric hypoxia). Research is conducted
within the newly constructed Altitude Centre and spans across areas of sports physiology (e.g.
altitude training), clinical (e.g. habilitation/rehabilitation) and occupation medicine (e.g. flight
crew performance).
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Title: The effect of intermittent high intensity exercise in hypoxia on skeletal muscle metabolism
and exercise performance.
Brief Description: Altitude training is a widely-practiced component of elite athlete training for
enhanced endurance performance. This project with challenge the current Live High Train Low
(LHTL) paradigm of altitude training. Working in the newly commissioned Residential Altitude
Centre the research will undertake to contrast the HDHL paradigm against a high intensity
intermittent hypoxia programme specifically designed for endurance based sports that require
repeated sprint ability. In addition to the cardiovascular and oxygen carrying capacity (e.g. total
Hb mass) changes in peripheral muscle metabolism will be measured using in vivo microdialysis of
skeletal muscle tissue challenged to exercise in normoxic and hypoxic environment.
Unique selling points of PhD project in UL:
Structured PhD Programme.
Critical Mass of PIs and Interdisciplinary Researchers with recurrent Funded Research Grant
Programme and Publication Output.
Excellent Resources including a newly commissioned residential Altitude Centre.
Superb campus environment.
