PHD POSITION IN EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS OF FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS
The group of ‘Experimental Physics of Nanostructured Materials’ led by Prof. A. V. Silhanek is a
young research unit of the Department of Physics (research area of Physics of Functional Materials,
Nanostructures and Bio Systems). Current research fields include superconductivity, magnetism,
semiconductor physics, thin film materials, and nanofabrication. In the framework of a starting
project on thermal properties of phonon engineered Si nanostructures, we offer a PhD position in the
domain of experimental physics of materials and nanofabrication.
Job description
You will be responsible for the research and development on thin film growth by physical vapor
deposition, nanofabrication by electron beam lithography, and chemical processing.
Your tasks will include :
 Fundamental research on nanostructured materials.
 Development of nanofabrication, physical vapor deposition processes for thin films, and chemical
processing of mesoscopic devices.
 Development of novel instrumentation for optical and thermal characterization at nanoscale and
mesoscale.
 Performing finite elements computation for understanding and optimizing the Si-based devices.
 Reporting to project partners.
 Regular scientific visits to the group of Prof. S. Melinte at Université Catholique de Louvain,
principal partner of the project.
 Publishing in international journals and communicating in major conferences in the research field.
Profile
 You have a Master degree in Engineering/Physics with background in condensed matter physics
or nanotechnology.
 Experience with semiconductors, nanofabrication and/or calorimetric measurements are an asset.
 You are a self-starter and a hands-on person.
 You are able to pursue challenging interdisciplinary problems.
 You have excellent reporting skills and are able to present scientific results (publications,
conferences, seminars).
 You can easily integrate in an interdisciplinary team with diverse backgrounds.
 You have an excellent command of the English language and excellent communication skills.
We offer
We offer a challenging position for 4 years at the University of Liège. The contract starts on October
1st, 2016, with a trial period of 3 months. Wages are in agreement with the salary scale of the
university.
