Field-induced phase transition in Haldane gap spin chains Ian Affleck1 1 Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada A magnetic field closes the Haldane gap and induces an ordering transition in antiferromagnetic chains of integer spin. I will discuss the nature of the transition, including crystal field terms in the Hamiltonian, and its experimental implications.
