Colon Cancer It's preventable! Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in the U.S.? However, the disease is highly preventable. Protect yourself by getting screened beginning at age 50. What is it? • Colon (or colorectal) cancer may develop from polyps (abnormal growths on the colon or rectum) that can grow to be cancerous. What should you do? • Precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer often don’t have symptoms in their early stages. • Colorectal polyps can only be detected through a colon screening test. • If you have symptoms, they may include blood in the stool, persistent stomach pain or cramps, or unexplained weight loss. Get screened regularly if you are aged 50 to 75. What are the risk factors? • Age 50 and older – more than 90 percent of colon cancer occurs in this age group. • A personal or family history of colon cancer or colorectal polyps. • Having inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis. Talk to your doctor about getting tested. • Other contributing factors include being overweight, sedentary, or having a low-fiber/high-fat diet. Health Advocate Can Help!
