OBJECTIVES for “Blood: Cells and Plasma Proteins”
Define the 2 major components of blood
Define the difference between plasma and serum
Explain briefly and in general terms how blood cells are formed
Define the major function(s) of each of the blood cell types. As we discussed red blood cells
(erythrocytes) and platelets in some detail, you should know some characteristics of these
two cell types.
Where are plasma proteins synthesized?
What are the major classes of plasma proteins?
We discussed albumin in some detail. What are some of the structural characteristics that
make it the “primary” transport molecule in the blood? Specifically, what does it transport
and how? What are its other functions?
Describe the major function(s) and characteristics of the other plasma proteins that we
discussed in class
What are some of the diseases or disease states associated with increased or decresead levels
of these proteins?
