Annual meeting participant, poster judge (Northeast regional /National)
National Kidney Foundation, member (2006-2007)
American Heart Association, member (2002-2007 and 2011-present)
CIVIC ACTIVITIES (SCIENCE EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS)
State Science Fair Judge (high school) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1998-present)
Teachers as Scholars Program (TAS); professional development program for K-12 teachers
(2005-present) a nonprofit, outreach organization designed to give K-12 teachers content-based
seminars led by University faculty to give educators an opportunity to discuss and reflect on
scholarly issues. Focus on the connection between research and education. Topic is entitled
“Science in the Media: the fact behind the fiction” topics include cloning and biotechnology.
Mentor/advise local high school students on science fair projects: Some of the public high
schools located near Boston do not have the resources or expertise to support their students’
science projects. Dr. McLaughlin (as well as members of her lab) mentor high school students
to successfully implement these activities by providing guidance and equipment not available to
them in their regular classrooms. (1998-present)
The Other Side of Science: This set of workshops is designed to help prepare participants
(undergraduate/graduate/postdoctoral) for “life after graduation”. Activities include: C.V. and
resume writing, interview skills, database searches, editing and writing, formal & informal
presentations (scientific and general audience), project budgets, website design, poster
presentations, reading primary literature effectively, requesting reagents (writing a good cover
letter), and scientific ethics. Participants include graduate, undergraduate students and
postdoctoral fellows working on research projects.
