Lab 6. Skeletal and Smooth Muscle
Jakoi 2014
SKELETAL MUSCLE
VOCABULARY:
Muscle fiber = cell, contains myofibrils (10-100 um)
Myofibrils = made of filaments (1um)
Myofilament = actin, myosin (20 nm)
Fascicle = several fibers (cells)
Epimysium- CT around several muscle fascicles
Perimysium – CT around one muscle fascicle
Endomysium – CT around single fiber (cell)
TO IDENTIFY:
Longitudinal Section:
o Fibrous = very long cells (up to cms), 20-100 µm diameter
o Striations = stripes = A-I banding, 2-4 µm long
o Peripheral nuclei are cigar-shaped and dark staining
o Multiple nuclei per cell
Cross Section:
o Large, polygonal cells, 20-100 µm diameter
o Stippled appearance = 1-µm dots = myofibrils in cross section
o Peripheral nuclei, dark staining
