Method Abstract #144
Acid Value/ Free Fatty Acids
________________________________________________________
Scope and Application
This method determines the amount of free fatty acids in fat and oil
samples. It is a variation of AOCS 5a-40
Method Summary
To determine the amount of free fatty acids (FFA) in a sample, first
ethanol is added and then the sample is titrated with sodium hydroxide. A
large inflection signifies the titration is complete. The results are then
calculated as Acid Value/Percent FFA oleic acid, FFA lauric acid and FFA
palmitic acid.

Measuring Range*
0.008 – 365 mg KOH/g
RSD @ Low Range (Fatty Alcohol
Sample = 0.014mg KOH/g)
2.88% or +/- 0.0004 mg KOH/g
RSD @ Mid Range (Methyl Ester
Sample = 0.12mg KOH/g)
2.68% or +/- 0.003 mg KOH/g
RSD @ High Range (Fatty Acid
Sample = 362.43mg KOH/g)
0.77% or +/- 2.79 mg KOH/g
*The measuring range was determined by analyzing various fat/oil samples and may potentially be
increased.
