The dedicated Nursing Team has specialist skills in caring for patients with complex
needs including those with neurological injury or illness. Our nurses undergo continuing
professional development as well as training with other health professionals to ensure
that they have the skills and expertise to enable them to care for people with complex
health problems.
Many of our nurses have extended their role as a Registered Nurse to enable them to
carry out such procedures as Phlebotomy and Tracheostomy care. Our team includes
registered nurses, both general and learning disabilities, which ensures that our patients
are able to develop to their full potential.
We have a Lifestyle Co-ordinator Team to ensure that all patients can carry out their
hobbies and become involved in activities within the home.
At Applegarth we offer 24 hour nurse led care. Our patients are under the direct
supervision of the RN team who are trained to the highest level to plan, evaluate and
deliver individualised care. All of our staff are caring, sensitive and compassionate.

Bedrooms
Throughout the complex we have a variety of rooms all of which are spacious and
decorated to a high standard. An interior designer was commissioned and supplied
bespoke soft furnishings.
In the 3 units for complex medical conditions, the bedrooms vary from 19 square
metres to 23 square metres and are en-suite; many have spacious shower rooms which
accommodate our adjustable height hydraulic shower beds.
Most rooms in the new units have under floor heating. The rooms have French windows
designed to allow our specialist profiling beds to pass through, leading to either a
personal terrace or covered balcony which provides access to and a view of the
landscaped gardens.
You are welcome to personalise your room – change soft furnishings, furniture, pictures,
decoration, etc. – if you wish.
Your bedroom is just that – YOURS. Remember that we are just visitors in your home.

Admissions, Care and Safety
Admissions
Applegarth operates an admissions policy which complies with the Equality and
Diversity Policy of the organisation. There are numerous forms to be completed and a
care plan to be formulated for you.
We suggest a trial visit to the unit before you make any decision. This visit will comprise
of at least half a day and if at all possible a night stay. The purpose of the visit is to
ensure that you have an opportunity to assess the unit. You will be given privacy to
discuss matters with other patients and to meet the staff. If you wish, members of your
extended family will also be offered the facility to discuss matters with other patients and
staff in private.
This will enable you to enjoy the facilities of the unit, including the meals and meet with
those people charged with your care. It is important that you have an opportunity to view
your home, the room you will occupy, discuss your requirements and see examples of
the records and information kept.
If a trial visit is not possible, or someone is admitted as an emergency, their needs and
requirements will be assessed and if appropriate the patient can decide to move
elsewhere.
Care and Safety
Applegarth cares for adults who are vulnerable therefore we are very conscious of the
dangers of fire. We are committed to training staff to deal with such an emergency. We
have in place a training system that is reviewed on a regular basis with staff and takes
into account the changing needs of our patients and developments in fire safety
pursuant to risk management. There is a written policy regarding what to do in the event
of a fire and you will be directed by staff should this be necessary. We have numerous
other policies in place which you are free to read and obtain from Matron.

Privacy and Dignity
Privacy and Dignity
Applegarth adheres to a strict policy of equality and diversity which is applied to
patients, to facilitate their need for dignity, identity, autonomy and self esteem.
It is a policy which we hold dear.
You will be holistically assessed and care will be performed according to your
specification and standard which takes into account and respects your individual
choices, culture, beliefs, religion and sexuality whilst maintaining your privacy and
dignity.
We will ensure that you are addressed by your preferred name and that your social,
cultural, religious and language requirements are respected.
Your preferences will be ascertained and reviewed on a regular basis.
Resuscitation
We are ever conscious of our patients’ choices and the question of resuscitation is one
of them. Some people have strongly held views and other people do not.
Resuscitation or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) involves the input of air into the
lungs and chest compressions in order to maintain circulation. It may keep the person
alive until an ambulance arrives.
You have a choice, you can say that you do not wish to be resuscitated, in which case if
your heart stops we will not attempt resuscitation. Such a choice has no bearing on your
treatment during your stay with us and you can change your mind at any time.
Everyone is cared for the same and this brochure simply highlights a further
consideration.
Please feel free to contact the Matron or Sister.

Consultation
Applegarth appreciates that the views of the resident patients and their families is an
invaluable guide to the maintenance of quality and wish to ensure that you are satisfied
with our service.
We make sure you are supported to make choices about your own treatment and the
development of your individual care plans.
We undertake extensive consultation with you and (if you wish) those close to you
concerning all aspects of care and the running of the unit and Nursing Home.
Patients are involved in the recruitment process by way of a questionnaire, helping at
interview etc., and in the review of staff after their probationary process, once more by
questionnaire and discussion.
In addition to this patient meetings are arranged so you and your representatives are
actively encouraged to participate in planning and setting service priorities and how the
service is run.
“Satisfaction” is defined as the degree to which the individual regards the
care or manner in which it is delivered by the provider as useful, effective and
beneficial.
“Quality” is a term for measuring and maintaining the high level of service.
With these two phrases in mind, Applegarth has implemented both Quality and
Satisfaction Questionnaires for the use of patients and families if appropriate.
A regular review of these tools will help us to guarantee patient satisfaction and
maintain the high quality of service that Applegarth wishes to ensure for its patients.

Lifestyle and Leisure
At Applegarth it is important to us that those who choose to live with us, have access to
all of the activities they would wish to have. Our dedicated Lifestyle and Leisure Team
will work with you to provide a schedule of events that fulfil your desires and needs.
We can organise days out, evenings with friends and if you wish holidays. Whenever
possible we will make sure that the things that are important to you continue, for
example, you are able to enjoy your favourite radio / television programme. In addition
there are group activities in the complex ranging from flower arranging to singing.
The following facilities are available but it is not an exhaustive list:
IT areas with Internet Access
In this modern age keeping in touch with the outside world is important. Our patients are
encouraged to use the computers to develop their skills, use the internet for their own
personal purchases and play games etc. We have computers in various parts of the
building for just that purpose.
Sensory Room
This Snoozelum has been designed to enable our patients to spend time relaxing. Look
at the slide show to see the various stimulating programmes we have available.
Beauty Therapy/Hair Dressing
We have a qualified beauty therapist and hair dresser available at the complex to
provide you with the luxuries in life that make you feel better. Therapies include
Aromatherapy, massage (including hand massage) manicures, makeup, etc.
Sensory Garden
We have developed a garden that enhances our patients’ quality of life. This part of the
garden with a water feature allows you to enjoy your time in the garden. The raised bed
is accessible to all to experience the different fragrances and textures of the plants.

agreed by all parties, the matter should be referred to the Proprietor for investigation
