Stacy DeRuiter Email [email protected] Education PhD (in progress): Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in Biological Oceanography. Thesis advisor: Dr. Peter L. Tyack. Anticipated date of completion of degree: 2008. B.A.: St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. Major: Biology (with Distinction); Paracollege Concentration in the Spirit of Science. Graduation May 2000. H.S.: Grand Rapids Christian High School, Grand Rapids, MI. Graduation June 1996. Research Experience 07/2003 – Present – Doctoral student, Dr. Peter L. Tyack’s Lab, WHOI. A desire to investigate anthropogenic influences on whale behavior and ecology underlies my research. Current interests include effects of airgun sounds on sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), analysis of beaked whale (Mesoplodon sp. and Ziphius sp.) and sperm whale prey composition and stress levels, and development of an acoustic tag for harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). 02/2002 – 06/2003 – Research Assistant, Dr. Dave Turner’s Lab, Mental Health Research Inst./Dept. Biol. Chem., University of Michigan. Lab research focused on the role of bHLH family proteins in neurogenesis, including the recent development of siRNA technology to inhibit genes of interest in mammalian cells. Independent projects included extensive work with RNA (including quantitative realtime PCR and DNA microarrays), transfection of cultured cells, cloning, and assistance with lab management. Summer 1999 – NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware. Title: “Population structure of the Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) in the Southern Ocean: preliminary findings from a RFLP analysis of mtDNA and a nuclear intron”. Advisor: Dr. Patrick Gaffney Spring 1999 – Independent Research, Biology Department, St. Olaf College. Title: “Determination of phylogeny of Leedy’s roseroot, an endangered club moss, using genetic sequence data”. Advisor: Dr. Joel Olfelt Summer 1998 – HHMI Summer Research Student, Biology Department, St. Olaf College. Title: “Distribution and abundance of Minnesota's freshwater mussels” (group project); “Freshwater mussel-fish interactions in the Superior National Forest and the Cannon River watershed, MN” (individual project). Advisors: Dr. Michael Swift, St. Olaf College; Dr. Gary Wagenbach, Carleton College Publications Vojtek, A.B., Taylor, J., DeRuiter, S. L., Yu, J-Y., Figueroa, C., Kwok, R. P. S., and Turner, D.
