Proteins and carbohydrates have
many different functions in living
things.
All proteins are made up of monomers
called amino acids. There are 20
common amino acids which make up
the different proteins in living
organisms and there is a huge variety
of proteins, all performing different
functions.
Carbohydrates are made up of monomers called monosaccharides; these are
single sugar molecules such as glucose and fructose (but there are many
others). Because carbon is a major constituent of carbohydrates, these
molecules can form a great variety of ring and chain structures, resulting in lots
of different carbohydrate polymers.
This is your challenge:
Research a minimum of three different proteins and carbohydrates. There
are lots of different ones in plants and animals (and some in bacteria, fungi
and protoctists as well).
Find out how it is that only 20 amino acids can form such a large number
and variety of different proteins.
Write a report of your research. Include pictures and diagrams to illustrate
your report and be prepared to share your findings with the rest of the
group
