Definition of Categories
Description/definition of categories

CATEGORY
DEFINITION / DESCRIPTION
General Worker
Someone who can perform all tasks at grassroots level.
Administrative
Personnel
This could include someone who

mans an office full-time;

does office administration;

operates a loading bridge;

operates a stock room; or

operates a pack house.
Technical Operator
This person is a specialist with a technical function.
This could include the following sub-categories:

a pest control officer;

an orchard monitor;

a cellar worker;

a mechanic;

a forklift driver;

a truck driver
Confirm any other additional sub-categories with WC:DoA
Irrigation Specialist
This is a person who is responsible for all irrigation activities,
whether manually or by computer/electronically.
Tractor Driver
This person drives the tractor in the fields.
Animal Production
This person is responsible for the care of animals (small and large
stock).
Social Development
This is a person who is involved in the social development of
agri-workers and their families.
This could include

a crèche worker;

a health worker;

an after-care facilitator;

a community worker;

a house (domestic) worker / nannies.
Agri-processing
This is a person who is:
 involved in the processing of a primary product (e.g.
peaches) into a secondary product (e.g. canned
peaches; jam, etc.)
Take note: the product must be produced on the farm with the
main ingredient being an agricultural product.
Foreman/-woman
It also includes a supervisor, team leader and section leader.
The person performs the following functions:

Supervises a team of workers and ensures that duties
are accurately implemented.

Completes daily timesheets of workers

Receives instructions from management and is not
solely responsible for decision-making.

Refers disciplinary problems and logistical obstacles to
management when necessary. (Is therefore not solely
responsible for problem resolution; can however
function independently to a point).
Serves on farm committees (e.g. health committee).
Daily planning for workers under his/her supervision
and can also help with weekly/monthly planning.
Junior Management
This is a person that can function on a more advanced and
independent level than a foreman/team leader and has more
responsibilities. Is directly above the foreman on the
organogram.
Tasks and functions include the following:

Resolving problems in the vineyard, orchard, etc.

Dealing with problems referred by the foreman and
refers it to middle manager if needed.

In the event of serious problems occurring in the junior
manager’s area, it is referred to the middle manager.

Assist with weekly planning and is responsible for the
distribution of instructions to the foremen and team
leaders.

Serves on farm committees (e.g. health committee).

Ensures that the administration of the foremen and
team leaders are completed correctly.

Ensures that foremen and team leaders implement
their duties effectively.
Middle
Management
Also refers to Production manager.
This person reports to the senior manager or owner of the farm
and is responsible for the following duties:

Planning and organising of production functions as
well as the managing of junior managers with their
respective teams.

Involved with budgeting, quality control.

Deals with disciplinary procedures.
Best Potential
Every region nominates one person for this category, to
compete during the Provincial adjudication.
This is a person:

who has the potential to possibly become a Provincial
Winner in the future, with the necessary development.

excluding participants in junior and middle
management.

it can be a winner or a non-winner.
Best performing
farm
Every region must provide recognition to the farm:
 with the most winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) in the
competition.
