Hydrogen Breath Test (Lactulose, Glucose, Lactose, Fructose)
The glucose and lactulose breath tests are done to determine if there are excessive bacteria in the
small bowel. Lactulose testing may also be used to determine the time it takes to move through
the small bowel. The lactose breath test is used to determine if the patient has lactose intolerance.
Fructose testing is used to determine if fructose intolerance exists. The most common problems
studied are:

Bloating and gas

Abdominal pain

Diarrhea or constipation
Breath test can last from 2 ½- 3 hours. You will take the test at the comfort of your home.
To prepare for this study:
1. Do not eat or drink anything after 7 p.m., although water may be consumed. (If
you are diabetic, please talk to your primary care doctor). Drinking water only
during your breath-test is allowed in moderation.
2. No beans (such as lentils or peas) or heavy meats (such as a steak) for dinner the
night before the test.
3. Limit dairy intake. No yogurt.
4. New patients should stop taking any antibiotics 14 days before the test. Repeat
patients should stop any antibiotics 4 to 10 days before the test.
5. You may take scheduled medications at least two hours prior to the study with
small sips of water. It is preferable that medications be taken after the study has
been concluded.
6. No gum chewing, mints, or smoking after midnight.
7. You may brush your teeth in the morning.
8. No smoking, including second-hand smoke, for at least 1 hour before or at any
time during the test.
9. No sleeping or vigorous exercise for at least 1 hour before or at any time during
the test.
10. If you recently had antibiotic therapy, runny diarrhea, colonoscopies, barium
studies or enemas, please wait 14 days after completion of the above mentioned
prior to starting your breath test.

Medications: If you take any Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) which contain Omeprazole,
Lansoprazole, Dexlansoprazole, Esomeprazole, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole, please wait 7
days after completion of the above mentioned prior to starting your breath test.
Even though patients are NPO (nothing by mouth) for 12 hours prior to the test, it is also
required to avoid certain foods at least another 12 hours prior to the NPO request
beginning.
Listed below are generic avoidance groups and are not limited to what is listed. If you are
uncertain if something may affect the test, do not consume the product and/or consult your
physician.
1. Grain Products: Whole grains products, including cereals and melba toast, brans or highfiber cereals.
2. Fruits: Fruit juices, applesauce, apricots, bananas, cantaloupe, canned fruit cocktail,
grapes, honeydew melon, peaches, watermelon. Raw and dried fruits like raisins and
berries.
3. Yogurts which contains fruit.
4. Vegetables: vegetable juices, potatoes, alfalfa sprouts, beets, green/yellow beans, carrots,
celery, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, mushrooms, green/red peppers, squash, zucchini.
5. Vegetables from the cruciferous family: Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage,
kale, swiss chard
6. Beans, lentils, etc.
7. Nuts, seeds, beans: All nuts, seeds and beans, as well as foods that may contain seeds.
8. All Dairy Products (except eggs): Milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and butter.
Suggestions for the Patient’s last meal to consume prior to nothing by mouth (NPO):
1. Baked or broiled chicken or turkey. (Salt and pepper only)
2. Baked or broiled fish. (Salt and Pepper only)
3. Plain steamed white rice.
4. Eggs.
5. Clear chicken or beef broth.
