Course Description:
This is a three-credit course designed for students in and out of Health Care majors. Programs include, but
are not limited to, Addiction Studies, Criminal Justice, Dental Assisting, Health Information Technology,
Massage Therapy, and Medical Assistant. Topics in descriptive statistics include data types, graphs,
frequency tables, measures of center, spread, and position, and properties of the normal curve. Topics in
pre-algebra include ratios, rates, proportions, and percentages.
Recommended preparation for Mth 31: Mth 10. Experience with Excel and Mth 20 may also be helpful.
Mth 31 is not designed to serve as a prerequisite for math 60.
Course outcomes:
 write ratios and solve problems involving proportions

convert numbers between decimals, fractions, and/or percents

solve problems involving percents

construct graphs (pie charts, bar graphs, histograms, stem-&-leaf plots) to display and interpret data

organize quantitative data into frequency tables

calculate and apply measures of center (mean, median, and mode) and understand their relationship
to the shape of a distribution

calculate and apply measures of dispersion (range, variance, standard deviation, inner-quartile
range)

calculate measures of position (percentiles, quartiles, and z-scores)

calculate the 5-number summary, create and interpret box-plots, and find outliers

understand the properties of the normal curve (bell curve), and determine percentages using zscores and statistical tables
