Laboratory Profile Principal Investigator: Liran Carmel Computational biology, bioinformatics and molecular evolution Location: Silberman building, 3rd. floor Room 2-342 Communication: E.Mail: [email protected] Phone: 6585103 Web: http://carmelab.huji.ac.il Brief description of research: My lab is purely computational, and studies a wide range of topics in comparative genomics and molecular evolution. We currently focus on topics such as identifying noncoding functions of introns, identifying the relations between introns in 3’UTRs and nonsense-mediated decay (NMD), identifying disease-causing genetic variations, studying forces designing codon usage bias in mammals, finding novel splicing regulatory elements, reconstructing evolutionary histories, and understanding the Neanderthal genome. Techniques: Computational biology and bioinformatics. We use many computational techniques, depending on the specific question that we study. We analyze a lot of deep sequencing data, including whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, and RNA-seq. Proposed Research Projects: Topic 1: Studying whether intron jumping had been a major evolutionary force that can explain peculiarities in intron-exon gene structure evolution. Topic 2: Studying intron-related features of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs).
