Glutaraldehyde Stabilized Red Blood Cells
Glutaraldehyde stabilized animal red blood cells are produced from freshly washed animal RBCs by brief exposure to a
glutaraldehyde-buffer solution and exhaustive washing in saline. This treatment largely preserves the native antigenicity of the
erythrocytes while rendering the cells generally resistant to lysis by osmotic shock, freeze-thawing or immune hemolysis. These
reagents are used directly in hemagglutination procedures, or may be coupled with various proteins for hemagglutination
testing. The glutaraldehyde stabilized RBCs are available as cell suspensions in saline with 0.1% sodium azide.
Tanned sheep red blood cell reagents are produced by coupling purified human serum proteins to glutaraldehyde stabilized
sheep RBCs with tannic acid. The sensitized stabilized sheep RBCs are useful reagents in hemagglutination testing of antibodies
and in the hemagglutination inhibition testing of other serum proteins. These reagents are supplied as cell suspensions in saline
with 0.1% sodium azide.

Fresh Red Blood Cells in Alsever’s
Washed, fresh red blood cells from sheep, rat, mouse, and guinea pig are available as stabilized 10% suspensions in Alsever’s
solution. The whole blood is aseptically collected and prepared to order from our colony of animals. These washed cell
suspensions are useful for the titration of complement, adsorption procedures, testing for agglutinins, and for the preparation
of stroma as particulate reagents.

Anti-Red Blood Cell sera are high titer rabbit antisera prepared by immunization with washed intact red blood cells of the
species listed. These antisera are useful in a variety of assays including hemagglutination and complement fixation, and to
identify lymphocyte subsets. These antisera are supplied as frozen products containing 0.05% sodium azide.
IgG fractions of high titer antisera are purified by salt fractionation and ion exchange chromatography. The IgG fractions are
tested against their immunogens, analyzed for immunoglobulin purity and protein concentration and sterile filtered. The IgG
fractions are sold as sterile frozen products in phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.8.
IgM fractions of high titer antisera are purified by salt fractionation, ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration
procedures. The IgM antibodies are tested against their immunogens, analyzed for immunoglobulin purity and protein
concentration and sterile filtered. The IgM fractions are sold as sterile frozen products in phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.8.
Fluorochrome conjugated IgG products are prepared by the covalent coupling of Fluorescein or Texas Red to high titer IgG
antibodies. The conjugates are purified to remove free fluorochrome, under-conjugated and over-conjugated antibodies.
The fluorescent products are analyzed for their fluorochrome : protein ratios; they will exhibit bright fluorescence on the red
blood cells of suitable species. The fluorochrome conjugated IgG products are sold as frozen reagents in phosphate buffered
saline, pH 7.8 and contain 0.05% sodium azide.
