THIS IS A VIRUS
•A Virus is not living- Nor is
it considered dead
•It must have a host cell to
reproduce and perform life
functions
•A virus has either DNA or
RNA, not both!
•Tail fibers are specific
protein receptor, that is why
some viruses can affect
only humans, only plants,
or only a certain type of
animal or plant.
Viruses can come in many shapes and forms
VIRAL DISEASES
ARE NOT TREATABLE
WITH
ANTIBIOTICS!!!
Herpes Virus
• An STD
• Can Affect all parts
of your body.
• Incurable
Pox Viruses
• Pox viruses are a family of
viruses which includes:
Chicken Pox, Cow Pox,
Small Pox, etc.
• Smallpox is a deadly
disease causing terrible
scars.
• It was wiped out by
widespread vaccination
several decades ago.
WARTS
• Blister-like bumps caused by
viruses in the skin.
INFLUENZA (FLU)
• Th flu virus mutates so quickly
that a new vaccine is required
every year.
Human Immune Virus (HIV)
• Transmitted sexually and in blood
products
• HIV attacks the Helper T cells of the
immune system.
• You do not die from HIV, you die from
other infections that lead to death. HIV
destroys your immune system causing
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome.
THIS IS A BACTERIUM (plural = bacteria)
BACTERIAL DISEASES
ARE TREATABLE WITH
ANTIBIOTICS!!!
sSTREPTOCOCCUS
• Round bacteria
that arrange
themselves in
strings (chains).
• Cause dangerous
infections in
humans such as:
Strep throat,
scarlet fever
DIPTHERIA
• Deadly bacterial infection that can be
prevented by vaccination (DPT)
RHIZOBIUM
• Bacteria that live in soil that transform
atmospheric nitrogen and turn it into
useful nutrients (nitrates) for plants
LACTOBACILLUS
• Bacteria used to make yogurt and
other dairy products.
E. Coli
• Bacteria found in the human
intestines that produce vitamin D
and aid in digestion.
BACTERIA
Structure
Prokaryotic cells with cell
wall, ribosomes and a loop
of DNA
Reproduction Asexual by binary fission
VIRUSES
Protein coat, DNA or
RNA, envelope
Only inside a host
cess using cell
machinery
Treatment
Antibiotics. Some can be
prevented by vaccines
before exposure.
Some can be
prevented by vaccines
before exposure.
Harm
Cause disease in plants
and animals; spoil food.
Invade specific cells of
plants and animals;
reproduce inside the
cells and destroy cells.
Benefits
Produce food (yogurt); fix
Used in research
nitrogen in the soil,produce
vitamin D in the large
intestine; decomposers
