The YACCA (Youth & Communities Combined Action) Program is a
free program, funded by the Department of Communities, designed
to address the needs of young people through support and various
activities. The program is available to any young person aged
between 10 – 18 who is regularly coming into contact with the
police / justice system, or at significant risk of offending in the
community. This could mean young people that are disengaged
from education or out of school on lengthy suspensions.
The program will run as a drop –in and referral service with
timetabled activities that focus on developing a young person’s
strengths and assisting them to set goals for the future regarding
their behaviour, education, and employment. The program aims to
re-engage young people in one of these areas. The program will
include educational workshops and programs alongside one-on-one
support services.

The structure of the sessions includes evaluation sheets, image cards,
question and answer sessions, acting out of the scenario and take home
activities to reinforce and build upon the learning undertaken.
This is a unique program and of real relevance to today’s young
people. It certainly challenges our young people to reflect upon their
own emotional, behavioural and social needs and the ways in which they
can and should develop self-help strategies and appropriate problem
solving skills to cope effectively with the issues and challenges of today’s
world. The content is hard-hitting but if we fail to address these issues,
due to our own ‘adult’ embarrassments and fears then we also fail the
young people we are seeking to support, challenge and develop.
Tough Issues, Tough Choices focuses on the real issues, problems and
concerns of today’s teenagers and is suitable for young people aged 13 –
18 years.
Again, this program can be tailored to meet the specific needs
of your group and can be condensed into fewer sessions.

KEEPING OUT OF TROUBLE


A Preventive Approach for Young
People


This workshop is open to all young people aged 10 – 18 ‘at
risk’ and runs for 6 - 8 weeks. The program can be tailored to
meet the specific needs of the group and the issues they are
facing.
The program is aimed at:
 All
young
people,
especially
those
who
have
demonstrated anti-social or criminal behaviour
 Young people who have not been identified as prolific
offenders
The Keeping Out of Trouble program provides interventions
targeted at young people who are, or are at risk of, committing
criminal offences. By developing their awareness of victims, the
consequences of their actions and sensitive issues as well as by
encouraging them to engage in self-reflection, young people will
develop the strategies, knowledge and understanding to support
themselves in making informed choices about their behaviour
and future actions.
Workshop objectives:






To enable young people to develop consequential thinking
To encourage the development of victim awareness
To develop an understanding of restorative work and
ways that they can engage in this kind of work
To further develop personal insight, gaining knowledge of
strengths and weaknesses and the ability to take
structured criticism and feedback
To encourage the development of confidence and selfassurance
To encourage the development of self-reflection skills
To develop an awareness of the consequences of their
behaviours – both for themselves and others
To further develop a sense of responsibility and locus of
control, that is, to have internal control
To encourage young people to further develop and
appreciate the perspectives of others, that is, empathy
To encourage young people to develop a range of
strategies to pre-empt and avoid anti-social and offending
behaviours
To encourage facilitators and young people to cooperate
as joint problem-solvers, engaging in wide ranging
discussions around key issues
Subject areas include: Criminal Damage, Shoplifting,
Sexual Assault, Substance Abuse, Group Assault and
Joyriding.
*All attending 80% of the sessions will receive a
certificate of participation.
TOUGH ISSUES, TOUGH CHOICES
Tough Issues, Tough Choices is a collection of 24 workshop sessions to
help young people learn how to tackle challenging issues by promoting
emotional literacy. It is specifically aimed at those young people with
behavioural problems.
Tough Issues, Tough Choices is an exciting and challenging program that
focuses upon the issues, problems and concerns of teenagers in today’s
increasingly diverse and complex society. Social, emotional and
behavioural issues relevant to these young people are presented within
this program.
Tough Issues, Tough Choices aims to address some of the ‘real’ concerns
and agendas of teenagers today whilst also promoting the development
of emotional literacy, equal opportunities and social justice. A central
objective is to encourage students to develop their own voice, to take
ownership of their own behaviours, values and responses and to become
reflective young adults able to effectively identify and challenge social
injustice.
The program is presented in three parts, each containing 8 scenarios
with accompanying activities. The issues presented are often extremely
challenging and hard hitting and include the following:







Underage age pregnancy
Graffiti
Date rape
Homophobia
Anorexia
Racism
Death
PEACE TALKS PROGRAM
Peace Talks is a powerful tool for reaching young people and
reducing violence and aggression. Lively and dynamic, this
research-based, program incorporates multiple approaches shown to
be effective in reducing aggression and violence. This is an eight
week program and session topics include:
BULLYING
COMMUNICATION & CONFLICT RESOLUTION
MANAGING YOUR ANGER
TRIGGERS TO VIOLENCE
ANGER REDUCERS
CYBER- BULLYING
Young people are taught to recognise the links between thoughts,
feelings and actions and the consequences of these as well as stress
and anger reducing techniques. The aims of the program are to
develop awareness around aggressive behaviour, acquire coping
strategies to prevent or reduce this behaviour and create a more
positive outlook for the future.
The program is suitable for young people with low to moderate
levels of aggression as well as those who don’t identify as having an
‘anger problem’.
*All attending 80% of the sessions will receive a certificate of
participation.
