Nuremburg Laws
September 15th 1939
Details:
These laws were introduced on September 15th 1935. They were put in place to
classify a Jew based on their family and marriages between Jews & Germans. For
example, Marriages between Jews and subjects of the state of German or related blood are
forbidden. Marriages nevertheless concluded are invalid, even if concluded abroad to
circumvent this law. If you are Half or more Jewish blood, then you are considered Jewish or if
you have 2 or more Grandparents that are Jewish you are considered Jewish. These laws were
terrible for the Jewish people because it caused a lot of hate towards them.
Connection to the book:
You can see this laws in the book when her friend Harry turned against her and
her family. He started to look at her differently because she is Jewish, even
though he never cared before. He did that because he believed in the Nazi ideals.

Concentration camps/Death camps
1940 – 1945
Details:
Millions of people were enslaved in these camps, where they were either
tortured, starved or killed. They were put to hard labor where eventually their
body would give in and they would eventually die or if they were too sick to do
anything they would either be shot or put into a gas chamber with 100+ Other
Jews. These camps were made to keep in “Animals” aka Jews. Just because the
Germans were racist towards Jews they made these camps all over Poland and
shipped millions of Jewish people to all of them.
Connection to the book:
This connects to “The Cage” Because when Riva and her family were being sent
away and the Germans decided who was healthy and sick. Whoever was sick
would be sent to Auschwitz. Riva’s mother was sent to Auschwitz because the
Germans decided that she was too sick to work. Later on in the book Riva was
sent to Auschwitz along with her siblings.

Wearing the stars of David
1939
Details:
This law was introduced in 1939, so that everyone would be able to identity who
was Jewish and who was not. The Jewish people had to wear the star of David as
symbol that they were Jewish. They had to patch it on to their clothes to identify
themselves as Jews so Germans would know. If the Jews did not wear the Star of
David on their clothes then the Germans had the right to kill them because they
would be breaking the law. If they did wear the star, then they would experience
discrimination because they are Jewish.
Connection to the book:
In the book they had to wear the star and Rive noticed other people with the star.
They were forced to wear it and if they didn’t they would be sent away. In the
book someone got beat up for taking the star off.

Liberation of the camps
1945
Details:
This was the end of the death camps and concentration camps. The first camps to
be seen by other countries was in Majdanak near Lublin Poland in 1944. Once the
Russians found out about the camps the Germans tried to hide evidence by
demolishing the camps.
Connection to the book:
In the end of the book the Russians had come and saved Riva and the rest of the
surviving Jews. The Russians had said that they are the first group of people who
have survived and that they are very lucky. Mainly every Jew who was in a death
camp never survived but Riva did.

Polish Ghettos
October 19
Details:
The invasion of Poland is why the Jewish Ghettos first started. It was the begging
of the extermination of Jews. It began in 1939-1942. These Ghettos were meant
to Segregate and cage in all of Poland’s Jewish population. Over 3.5 Million Jews
were put into these Ghettos. In smaller towns ghettos were mainly used for Slave
labor camps and later on the Jews would slowly be taken out and shipped off to a
death camp. One of the biggest ghettos was Lodz.
Connection to the book:
The beginning of “The Cage” Riva and her family was stuck in the Polish ghetto
Lodz. The conditions were horrible. People were getting sick all the time and
there was barley any food people were starving. It was so bad that Riva had saved
up a lot of food just to exchange it from the black market for a tangerine. It was
very crowded and dirty.
