Hands-On Verbal Spontaneous Problem
Marshmallow Launch
JUDGE READS:
This is a hands-on, verbal problem. You have one minute to decide which five team members will participate.
You will have 15 minutes to solve this problem. The problem has two parts.
In part one, using the materials provided, you will have ten minutes to create and test a
mechanism to launch mini marshmallows into a bucket.
In part two, you will have five minutes to launch up to 20 marshmallows into the bucket.
During part one, the team may decide where to place the bucket and where to stand with
the launcher, but the distance between the launcher and the bucket must be at least 12
inches. At the start of part two, the bucket must be set and not moved. The launcher can
move cannot get closer than 12 inches.
The team will receive score as follows:
10 - 50 points for teamwork
10 - 50 points for creativity of the marshmallow launcher
10 points for each marshmallow successfully launched into the bucket
Judge provides the team with the following items:
2 plastic cups
2 balloons
1 plastic spoon
2 unsharpened pencils
1 rubber band
5 paper clips
5 labels
scissors (these may NOT be used in your solution as a part of the launcher)
bucket to catch marshmallows
20 marshmallows
On the floor, put down two masking tape lines, 12inches apart and 5 feet wide.
Supplies: plastic cups, balloons, plastic spoons, unsharpened pencils, rubber bands, paper
clips, 5 labels, scissors, bucket to catch marshmallows, marshmallows
