President’s Message
State of the Department
To my IU Orthodontic Colleagues: Happy Summer! It’s been a long
time coming! It is a particularly
happy summer for seven second
year IU Ortho residents who
graduate Friday, July 10th after
so many years of college, dental
school and orthodontic specialty
training. Remember that
Dr. Ken Hyde
IU Ortho Class of 1977 feeling? It’s also significant for
another seven first year residents
who will become second years even though it seems to
us like they just started. In comes another group of first
year residents and the cycle continues. The practice of Orthodontics is continuously
changing. These 2015 grads face new challenges or at
least a new intensity of challenges most of us never
faced. Average student loan debt is at an all-time
high. Competition from non-orthodontists advertising
quick braces treatment and removable aligners is bolder
than ever. Government, lawyers and insurance companies
continue their intrusive parade of meddling into health
care and the public still does not fully appreciate the
difference between an orthodontist and someone who
does some orthodontics. Still orthodontics remains
a great profession (it’s not a trade). Taking the time
machine back to start college again, I would want to
follow the same path, try to get my GPA higher this time
and find a way to make it through to be an orthodontist.
Sounds like a great movie plot!
Our challenge remains proving that we are THE
ORTHODONTIC SPECIALISTS. Our diagnostic
capabilities are unsurpassed by other orthodontic
providers. Our treatment management is superior to any
online aligner technician or ortho-dentist. Our patient

Another year has passed! Not
only has the department survived,
but we have continued to succeed! The department has
a great group of faculty and students who have led the
resurgence with support from a great staff.
Congratulations to Drs. Kelton Stewart and Sean Liu
who were approved for promotion to Associate Professor
and for tenure. This process is a big deal! In one respect,
it means the culmination of six years of work at Indiana
University that was determined by the faculty of the
department and IUSD as excellent in at least one area
of evaluation, but in another respect, it means Indiana
University system considered their work as excellent.
Kelton received his promotion and tenure approval
based on teaching. In addition, this year, he received
the covetous IU Trustees Teaching Award and the IUPUI
Prestigious External Award Recognition (PEAR). IUSD
sponsored his attendance at the Academy of Academic
Leadership Program He was a National Board Dental Test
Constructor and the Treasurer for the Board of Directors for
the Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association
(SCADA). Kelton also ended a successful year as Chair of
the American Dental Education Association’s Orthodontic
Section and as Orthodontic Program Director.
Promotion and tenure for Sean Liu was based on
excellence in research. Currently, he is a co-investigator
on a grant entitled “Development of an Orthodontic
Device to Accelerate Tooth Movement Using Low-Energy
Light Irradiation Phase 1”. In addition to the research

care is second to none. How can we not be a little
proud? IU pride is what we have for our dental school and our
orthodontic department. With the recent approval
from IU Bloomington, we are very close to starting an
exciting expansion to the existing dental school. The
Ortho Department can certainly use some upgrades
to advance our vision of IUSD to make Indiana...one
of the best dental schools for the 21st century (heard
that somewhere before?). Our department may take up
permanent residence in the new wing or it may move
temporarily while the existing space gets a complete
overhaul. No doubt starting fresh in new construction
would be our first choice if that is possible. When you
have the opportunity to contribute, please help your
orthodontic department move up the ladder into a first
class facility.
How else can you contribute? Ever thought about
sharing your experience with the residents? Maybe
volunteering as a guest lecturer or as a part-time clinical
instructor would keep you on your toes. There is much to
be learned by teaching. I’m looking forward to seeing many familiar faces at the
Burstone Symposium this fall. A good lineup of speakers
is in store for us. We will conduct an IUOAA meeting
during a lunchtime at that meeting. Please try to attend.
Enjoy your summer!

and writing, he is an elected member of the IUPUI Faculty
Council. Sean has successfully mentored many students
and post-doctoral fellows. In addition, he became boardcertified this spring.
Ahmed Ghoneima was appointed Assistant Professor
tenure-track. The AAOF awarded him the Michael Matlof
Memorial Teaching Fellowship Award- Orthodontic
Faculty Development Fellowship Award and the Orhan C.
Tuncay Teaching Fellowship Award- Orthodontic Faculty
Development Fellowship Award. The AAO has given
him a scholarship to attend the Academy of Academic
Leadership Program.
Our new predoctoral director, Achint Utreja, has been
busy also. He received an EMPOWER award from IUPUI
and also received $20,000 through a 2015 Orthodontic
Faculty Development Fellowship Award from the
American Association of Orthodontists Foundation
(AAOF) for his proposal titled “Maxillary Expansion in an
Animal Model: Light Buccal Loads Simulating Clinical
Mechanics”. His mentors are Drs. Katherine Kula and
Eugene Roberts. Achint was selected by the AAO for full
sponsorship to the Academy of Academic Leadership
Program. He also became board-certified this spring
and mentored two dental students who were awarded
research fellowships.
This year, we completed IUPUI Initiative Signature
Center Award for the Three-Dimensional Imaging of the
Craniofacial Complex Center (3D ICCC) in which multiple
orthodontic faculty (Ahmed Ghoneima, Sean Liu,
Kelton Stewart and Jie Chen) led by Katherine Kula
received $300,000 to develop research in 3D Imaging.
Multiple collaborations (eg. Riley’s Craniofacial Team,
Biology, Anthropology, Adult Sleep Medicine, Pediatric
Sleep Medicine, Computer Science and Informatics,
Music) have been set up across campus utilizing the
facilities and personnel for several research projects.
Many of these collaborations have produced publications
and grants proposals with collaborators.
John Starbuck, our former postdoctoral fellow, is moving
to Florida to accept a full-time position in Anthropology.
His replacement is Eman Allam, an oral pathologist with
a degree in public health also. She started last month
and has been busy gathering data for a new project.
The part-time faculty also are active. Tony Puntillo
presented a talk on SureSmile at the AAO. Mike Koufos

has participated nationally in interdisciplinary treatment
competitions. Tim Alford continues to provide for the
children of Haiti and has accomplished many wonderful
things for them. Ken Hyde organized the alumni together
last fall in Chicago, but is winding down as President of
the Alumni group and will retire at the end of June. Don
George will stay until the fall and then spend some time
in Meharry. The entire department appreciated the help
they provided in so many ways.
Bhavna Shroff, Graduate Program Director of the Virginia
Commonwealth University Orthodontic, was the Mock
Board Evaluator of the second year graduate students’
cases. She was impressed with the organization of
presentation and with the quality of cases as well as the
knowledge of the second year students.
The incoming graduate students this year are: Lindsay
DeSantis from IUSD; Jeffrey Heinz from Detroit Mercy;
Wei Huang from China: Jonathan Lambert from IUSD;
Andrew Raber from IUSD; Raymund Rebong from
California, and Hsin-Yin Yeh from Taiwan.
Our graduating students are all over the map with their
future plans. Dr. Emily Longwith is excited because
she has signed a contract as an associate in Houston,
Texas. Gretter Cardo is headed back to Miami, FL. David
Mika will be sharing his sister’s office in the Detroit, MI
area and associating in Jaline, MI. Richard Hannah has
plans to partner with his uncle’s practice in the suburbs
of Kansas City (but on the Kansas side). Vargah Lotfi
is setting up in California north of San Francisco. Brian
LaBlonde is definitely heading to the Chicago area,
whereas Nozha Sawan will be returning to Saudi Arabia
to practice. Our best wishes for success and happiness in
their new positions goes with them.
The rising second year students (Branson Billings,
Mohammad Aldosari, Jesse Mitchem, Irene Cho, Jamie
Lazin, Tadziu Kula, and Vidya Bettagere) have their
bodies in the clinic, their heads in the books, and their
hearts in seeking practices. Why not talk with them and
see if they are interested in going into practice with you?
Our fellowship program is going strong. Two fellows
(Jennifer Schaetzel from Nebraska and Hsin-Yin Yeh
from Taiwan) participated in research projects with
the faculty to increase their competitiveness of their
application to orthodontics.
Quite a few of the recent and not quite so recent alumni
celebrated at the AAO reception in San Francisco (see
pictures). It was an excellent meeting.
Burstone Symposium: The fourth Burstone
Biomechanics Initiative Symposium will be held on
October 23 and 24, 2015 (at the Sheraton Indianapolis
City Centre) with some exciting speakers and topics.
The life of Dr. Charles Burstone will be celebrated at the
dinner Friday night. Mike Marcotte and John Lindquist
will provide some insights into their connections with
Charlie. The dinner will be held in the spectacular
banquet hall with a 2800 view of the city and Monument
Circle. Alumni and friends are encouraged to make time
in busy schedules to attend, ask questions, celebrate
Charlie Burstone’s life and contributions to IUSD, and
network with friends. See you there!
Passing of Friends
Unfortunately, we also need to report the passing of
some of our friends and alumni, all significant players
in the orthodontic field. We will miss them, but need to
celebrate their lives and what they meant to so many
people. Please keep us informed and we will try to get the
information out to all.
As many people already know, Charles Burstone
passed away in South Korea doing what he loved to
do, teaching. He traveled throughout the world talking
about biomechanics, but particularly loved Korea having
spent time on military duty there. His contributions to
IU Orthodontics, his students and orthodontics were
significant and will not be forgotten.
LaForrest “Woody” Garner, Class of 1961, also passed
away this spring. He was the dental school’s first
associate dean for minority student services, the first
African American chair of a major academic department
at IUSD, and the first African American president of the
Indiana Society of Orthodontics. Dr. Garner served as
professor and chair of the orthodontics department at
IUSD for more than 15 years, and then spent another 10
plus years as dean for graduate programs. He was named
Professor Emeritus in 1998. In addition, he was a friend,
role model, and mentor to many.
Warren Hamula, Class of 1958, father of David Hamula,
Class of 2002, taught at IU for about 10 years, was an
3

(cont’d)
editor of Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and authored
many papers. He was well known for his office designs
and patents. Among his many accomplishments was
his role as a President of the Indiana Orthodontic
Association and a charter member of the American Board
of Orthodontics. He passed in the fall of 2014.
Tom Kiebach, Class of 1978, had been practicing
orthodontics and pediatric dentistry in Louisiana and was
busy lecturing nationally on mixed dentition treatment.
He allowed time to come back to IU to lecture to the
orthodontic students and was making plans to return
when he passed. Just prior to his passing, he called and
announced excitedly that he “finally” published a paper
and wanted Woody Garner to know that the impossible
had happened.

Message from the Class of 2015 to Alumni
We are working very hard to earn our degrees and
to become the best orthodontists possible. We
are very appreciative of all the faculty and their
support in this journey. We are all very grateful for
the continued support and encouragement from our
alumni. We could not be earning the education and
training that we are receiving without our alumni
support. We hope that we too will be supportive
alumni after graduation.
Alumni on Dinner Cruise in Chicago
It was a great night for everyone on the alumni dinner cruise on Lake Michigan on September 12. The boat
left the Navy Pier in Chicago for a sunset champagne dinner that included a tour of the Chicago skyline.
The weather was stormy but once on the boat it was smooth sailing. Alumni were able to reconnect with
classmates and meet new friends. Thanks to everyone who attended. Dr. Ken Hyde organized the cruise as a
way for alumni to connect during the GLAO meeting.

ABO Presents O.B. Vaughn Special Recognition Award
Monday, 08 June 2015
Reprinted in part from Orthodontic News
The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) recently
awarded James J. Baldwin, DDS, MSD, and Jerome
H. Sklaroff, DDS, MS, the O.B. Vaughan Special
Recognition Award. The award is named in honor of
Dr O.B. Vaughan, an ABO past president. The ABO
established this award to acknowledge those who
have made significant contributions to orthodontic
education and furthered the ideals of the ABO.
Baldwin retired from 58 years of continuous service
as a part-time professor of orthodontics and member of the graduate faculty at the Indiana University
School of Dentistry in 2014. He also held a part-time
appointment at the University of Illinois-Chicago
School of Dentistry. In addition, Baldwin served as a
referee for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and The Angle Orthodontist.
“I am moved that the ABO even considered me for
this wonderful award,” Baldwin said. “I am particularly pleased to receive the O.B. Vaughan Award because I know Dr Vaughan personally and have a very
high regard for him. It is nice to be remembered with
this honor.”
Baldwin has received many prestigious awards,
starting with his membership in the Phi Beta Kappa
Society. More recently, he was awarded life membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National
Dental Honor Society and was selected as the Honor
Dentist of the Indianapolis District Dental Society.
In May 2000, the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation presented Baldwin with the Louise
Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and
Research Award. Baldwin also received the Dale B.
Wade Award for Excellence in Orthodontics from the
ABO in 2006. He has been a diplomate of the ABO
since 1966.
In the mid-1950s, Baldwin introduced Dr Charles
Burstone to the physical principles of statics and
equilibrium. From this foundation, they jointly derived the original principles for orthodontic
biomechanics, which were presented to the Angle
Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society
of Orthodontists in 1960. Recent publications and
textbook chapters include “Pre-Prosthetic Alignment
of a Compensated Class in Malocclusion in a Partially Edentulous Adult,” Case Studies in Orthodontics
2000; “Adjunctive Orthodontic Therapy: Biological,
Mechanical and Treatment Considerations,” Textbook
of Orthodontics, SE Bishara 2001; and “Corrections of
Partially Edentulous Malocclusions: Facial Esthetics
and Vertical Dimension of Occlusion,” Frontiers of Dental Oral Facial Esthetics, JA McNamara 2001.
Baldwin earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from
DePauw University in 1947 and his master’s degree in
physics from Yale University in 1948. In 1954, Baldwin earned his DDS from the University of Indiana. In
1960, he completed his master’s degree and certificate in orthodontics at the University of Indiana.
“Dr Baldwin has contributed greatly to the specialty of orthodontics, both through teaching and his
research,” said Valmy Kulbersh, DDS, MS, an ABO
director. “He has left an indelible mark, and the ABO
thanks him for his efforts to further the specialty.”
