`1 Course Outline Teacher: Mr. R. Scott Email: [email protected] Text: Math Links 7 The major emphasis of Math is to allow the students to explore math concepts using various methods. By determining appropriate strategies they will then be able to explain not only how this works but why. Through this approach we hope to give the students the knowledge and confidence to go out and solve problems outside of the classroom. Materials: Scientific Calculator Binder Graphing paper Pencil Outcomes NUMBER Geometry Set Scissors Specific Outcomes (September – January) Develop number sense. PATERNS AND RELATIONS Determine and explain why a number is divisible by 2-10 and not 0 Demonstrate an understanding of the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of Decimals to solve problems Solve problems involving percent Relationship between positive terminating decimals and positive fractions and positive repeating decimals and fractions Adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed numbers, Adding and Subtracting integers, concretely, pictorially and symbolically Compare and order positive fractions, positive decimals and whole numbers by: benchmarks, place value, equivalent fractions / decimals (January – March) Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems. Oral and written patterns and their equivalent linear relationship Table of values, analyze the graph Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways. Modeling preservation of equality, concretely pictorially and symbolically, applying preservation of equality to solve equations Expression and equations Model and solve Linear equations SHAPE AND SPACE (March – May) Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems. Demonstrate an understanding of circles Develop and apply a formula for determining area of triangle, parallelograms, circles Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them. Geometric construction: perpendicular line segments, parallel line segments, perpendicular bisectors, angles Describe and analyze position and motion of objects and shapes. Plot points in the four quadrants of a Cartesian plane, using integral order pairs Translations, rotations or reflections STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY (May – June) Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems. Central Tendency and range (mean, median, mode Effects of mean, median and mode Construct, label and interpret circle graphs Use experimental or theoretical probabilities to represent and solve problems involving uncertainty. Express probabilities as ratios, fraction and percent Identify the sample space, conduct a probability experiment Evaluation Students will be assessed on their understanding on each outcome in the Math 7 curriculum There will be Unit Exams at the end of each unit, these will be kept by the teacher. There will also be a Final Exam covering all material learned over the year. HONOUR ROLL: Combination of 3’s and 4’s in 4 core and one option (No more than two 3’s; no 1’s or 2’s) – June Report HONOUR ROLL WITH DISTINCTION: 4’s in all subject areas Expectations of Students - Come to class ON TIME - Be attentive during class - Use time effectively when assignments are given - Respect others and their property - It is your responsibility to catch up on missed work and hand it in on the date set by the teacher. There will be a homework file located in the classroom with extra copies of all handouts and assignments. - NO JUNK food or drinks in class (Healthy snacks and water is acceptable) PLEASE clean up after yourself. Late Assignment Policy -Assignments are due at the beginning of class o PLEASE get your assignments in on time!!! o Assignments will be expected to be finished, one day extensions will be given to complete assignments, with a discussion with the teacher o If the assignment has not been complete, student will be expected to complete the assignment during recess time. Classwork will all be posted on the Cremona School website daily (Student – Homework) Parent Portal This can be accessed by parents and Studnets to see an up to date progress report. Rewrites -You may be given a quiz on a daily basis on the work you were assigned the day before, this is called a homework quiz. NO rewrites will be given for Exams. If a student is absent from an exam they must write the exam on the first day they return to class. Special circumstances may be taken into consideration if the student communicates the situation with the teacher prior to the exam date. Failing quiz / test marks and sloppy assignment work maybe returned to the student for corrections to improve their mastery of the material. I encourage students to redo any work they want, we can adjust marks if mastery of skills has been proven. Extra help is available by request during recess, lunch, and before school for any students with questions or difficulties. Extra help is most beneficial if the student writes down specific questions or concepts that they are struggling with and brings them to the session DAILY CLASS WORK It is important that you remain caught up in class, one class leads into the next. If you are missing you can get missed assignments off of the website.
