Title: National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Surveillance Epidemiologist

Purpose: This full-time NHSN Surveillance Epidemiologist will work on multiple
projects providing data analysis support. The NHSN Surveillance Epidemiologist will
help with ongoing analysis and reports of NHSN data including new data provided via
the Antimicrobial Use and resistance (AUR) Module, the Antimicrobial Stewardship
Communities of Care Initiative and NHSN Validation data.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Qualitative and quantitative data analysis including large-scale data transfers,
trend graphing, and statistical analysis. Analyses will be performed on data from:

Ongoing surveillance data provided from Michigan healthcare facilities via the
National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)

Newly provided data from the NHSN Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (AUR)

Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a master's degree with a major in epidemiology or
public health with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in
epidemiology and biostatistics courses.

Experience: Coursework in basic Biostatistics, Epidemiology.
Important Skills and Characteristics: Employee must have excellent oral and
written communication skills and be able to work well in team situations. Selfmotivated, ability to simultaneously lead multiple groups with different goals,
able to complete work in timely manner, and handle multiple tasks at one
time under supervision. Knowledge of epidemiology, biostatistics, and data
analysis; of spreadsheets and database software; of general record keeping
and filing systems; and of basic mathematics preferred. Proficiency in
Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet browser
software.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment.
Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and
equipment of <50# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25–75% of the
time.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.
IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS
This position will provide training and education at the Masters level to develop and
enhance healthcare–associated and resistant pathogen infectious disease
surveillance. This area of Public Health is new and exemplifies an important issue in
emerging infectious diseases across the country. The problems of healthcareassociated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance were once thought to be
confined to the hospital setting, but are now impacting the community. Employee
will have a direct impact upon the healthcare facility and state-level HAI surveillance.
