What are weather instruments?
Essential Question or I Can Statement
After discussion the child will be able to
Lesson Objective
identify and explain how each weather
instrument is used in gathering weather data
and making forecasts with 80 percent
accuracy.
I will assess each child independently through

an eight question worksheet over what was
learned in class about weather instruments.
Questioning will be used for differentiation.

Opening Session
Opening to include the following elements:
Gain attention
State behavior expectations
Prior Knowledge
Lesson Objective
I will raise my hand, the children know that
when an adult does this they are to become
silent and raise their hand also to let me know
their attention is on me.
Students will participate in the activity taught
in class. Students are expected to work
cooperatively.
Last class session we learned about the water
cycle, condensation precipitation, evaporation
and so on. Today we are going to learn what
weather instruments can be used to measure
some of those weather changes. For example
precipitation or rain, Does anyone know what
instrument can be used to measure rain fall?
Today we will learn about weather
instruments, such as the following:
thermometer, barometer, anemometer,
hygrometer, wind vanes and rain gauges. It is
important to learn about weather instruments
because they are used to make weather
forecasts or predict future weather. Did you
ever wonder how scientist can predict what
our weather will be like tomorrow?

Work Session
Instruction: (Day 1)
I.
Identify your concept. (Include auditory and visual learning styles.)
The following vocabulary will be written on the board: meteorology, weather instruments,
thermometer, barometer, anemometer, hygrometer, wind vanes and rain gauges.
II.
Define your concept. (Include auditory and visual learning styles.)
The students will view a PowerPoint with the following information on the smartboard, I will also read
aloud each PowerPoint.
Meteorology-is the study of weather.
Weather Instrument-can be used to make weather forecasts, or predictions of future weather.
Thermometer-A thermometer measures air temperature. If the air cools down during the day or
warms up in the evening, this change is a sign that rain may fall soon.
Barometer-A barometer measure the air pressure, which is also barometric pressure. A change in the
air pressure often means the weather is about to change.
Anemometer- An anemometer measures wind speed. Like a change in air pressure, a change in wind
speed may mean that the weather is about to change.
Hygrometer- A hygrometer measures humidity. An increase in humidity often means it’s about to rain.
Rain gauges-measure rainfall amounts.
Wind vanes-measure wind direction.
As a class we will complete Activity 1 and 3 from our classroom Weebly website.
Activity 3 will be at end of unit. Due date TBA.
III.
Explain your concept.
The study of weather is meteorology. To study weather, scientist must first measure it. Meteorologists, scientist who
study weather, use many measuring instruments. The measurements taken with these weather instruments can be used
to make weather forecasts, or predictions about future weather. For example, you may know that cold air is denser—and
thus exerts more pressure—than warm air. A rising barometer reading, which indicates increasing air pressure, often
occurs just before colder air arrives. Since cold air usually has less water in it than warm air does, a rising barometer also
means lower humidity and less chance of rain. Thermometer-A thermometer measures air temperature. If the air cools
down during the day or warms up in the evening, this change is a sign that rain may fall soon. Barometer-A barometer
measure the air pressure, which is also barometric pressure. A change in the air pressure often means the weather is
about to change.
Anemometer- An anemometer measures wind speed. Like a change in air pressure, a change in wind speed may mean
that the weather is about to change. Hygrometer- A hygrometer measures humidity. An increase in humidity often means
it’s about to rain. In contrast, a falling barometer reading often indicates the presence of warmer, more humid air and a
greater chance of rain. Meteorologist use rain gauges to measure rainfall amounts. Wind is another weather factor that
should be considered. Several instruments can be used to measure wind speed. Both windsocks and wind vanes measure
wind direction. Information about wind speed and direction is important because wind often brings changes in the
weather. Knowing which direction the wind is blowing from helps forecast the weather. For example, if it’s winter and a
wind starts blowing from the south, you can predict that the weather will soon be warmer.

Differentiation Questions
Lower level Bloom: What was our lesson about? (Low student)
Lower Level Bloom: Tell me one thing you learned about weather instruments? (Low

Higher Level Bloom: How does the information about weather instruments relate to
your life? (Middle to High student)
Higher Level Bloom: Is it important for us to learn about weather instruments? Why
or why not? (High Student)
The children will play Quizlet on the interactive smart board, the students take turns

future weather. I want the whole class to answer
together. What is a meteorologist is? What is a
thermometer? Barometer? Anemometer? Hygrometer?
Wind vanes? Rain gauge? What are they used for?
Tomorrow we will review weather instruments and
then we will create one. Which instrument you may
ask? That answer my darlings is a surprise!
How could I improve my lesson? How could I assess
the students better? What should I change about my
lesson? Did I teach my objective? Did I reach all my
students?
