Training Experiences for MCH Leadership Competencies
Suggested training experiences that MCH Training Programs may want to use to
reinforce the MCH Leadership Competencies.
MCH Knowledge Base
Examples of Training Experiences
1. Review historical articles and presentations (Roots article, Hutchins; MCH
History PowerPoints, UAB)
2. Review web site overview of public health (e.g., www.asph.org , What is Public
Health?)
3. Policy Analysis
4. Write a brief about an emerging local MCH public health issue
5. Attend a meeting of a local MCH stakeholder group, provide a written summary
of their approach
6. Become familiar with state-specific information on the Title V Information web
site, in order to: 1) describe a state's plan to achieve one or more of the 18
National Performance measures or 2) identify the empirical basis (from needs
assessment) for one state-specific performance measure.
7. Observe a Title V MCH Block Grant Review
8. Become involved, from a provider/stakeholder perspective, with the Title V MCH
Block Grant 5-year needs assessment.

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
Examples of Training Experiences
1. Develops persuasive case for policy implementation in MCH field collating
evidence, addressing possible objections, and developing sequential action steps
2. Goes through exercise where argues one side of controversial position and then is
able to effectively take the opposing view
3. Identifies motivation and what are the near and long term interests of opposing
sides in sample conflicts e.g. vaccination of all children for childhood diseases,
early screening of children for rare disorders, etc
4. Reads and discusses Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving in”
by Ury, Fischers and Patton (1991).
5. Analyses case study of opposing positions such as Special Education dispute, or
resource allocation example to break down respective positions, motivations,
desired outcomes and possible alternative solutions.

2. Identify current issues in the legislation and regulation of the US MCH system
3. Map the organizational relationships in the delivery of health care in a
community, including networks for addressing continuity of care
4. Explain the roles of the public and private sector in meeting health needs and
priorities
5. Prepare a program budget for a project or program area
