Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training offered by the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, (GMHCN). Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual having a heart attack Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out to someone in need. They apply the newly learned knowledge of the appropriate peer, social, self-help, and professional resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve RECOVERY. Trainees are from all walks of life and include law enforcement, first responders, faith based communities, hospital staff, correction officers, nursing students, medical communities, mental health courts, mental health support groups, human resource professionals, business leaders, school and college workers, etc. MHFA trainings presented by GMHCN are unique because they are recovery based and presented by Certified Peer Specialists. The peer delivered MHFA training has been embraced by the many people trained, who report the following: Personal Experiences by the trainers added a depth to the training that couldn’t be created in any other way” and “The trainer’s made is easier for me to share my own experiences. They provided an atmosphere of open sharing and compassion.” If you or your community group, organization, or business is interested in hosting a MHFA training, we will provide the trainers, manuals and materials. All you need to provide is a venue for 20-25 people and participants. TO SCHEDULE A TRAINING: Contact the GEORGIA MENTAL HEALTH CONSUMER NETWORK.
