DAVID TOLLNER MLA I MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING
PETER STYLES MLA I MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT
WE CARRY THE TERRITORY CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED
7 November 2013
Minister for Transport Peter Styles and Minister for Employment and Training David Tollner today
launched the We Carry The Territory campaign at the Darwin Railway Terminal at East Arm.
The transport and logistics industry is a key enabler of the NT economy, and this campaign is set
to raise community awareness about the many opportunities in the field as well as support the
continued growth of the industry.
“We Carry The Territory will raise the profile of transport and logistics in the Northern Territory and
create opportunities for local businesses to up skill and network,” Mr Styles said.
“Transport and logistics is an essential part of our everyday lives and a significant driver for
economic growth in our urban, regional and remote towns.
“It is the backbone of so many other industries – such as mining, tourism and farming – with
millions of tonnes of goods transported across the Territory each year by road, rail, air and sea.
Minister for Employment and Training David Tollner said the industry was also a major employer.
“The industry employs more than 6500 people across the Territory,” Mr Tollner said.
“The industry continues to grow with transport activity in 2011-12 accounting for $771 million of the
Northern Territory’s GSP, an increase of 15.4% from the previous year.”
The campaign will include an industry website, business development workshops and a new logo,
which will be displayed on trucks, buses and other transport and logistics equipment across the
Territory.
The campaign is supported by local transport and logistics businesses, members of the NT
Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory Group and the Northern Territory Government.
Chair of the NT Transport and Logistics Workforce Advisory Group Peter De Jonge said it was
often taken for granted the availability of products and services in our day to day activities, but
seldom do we stop to think about the coordinated effort undertaken to meet our demands as a
consumer.
“The transport and logistics industry is so entrenched into servicing the people and community,
locally, nationally and globally, that to imagine life without transport and logistics, would be difficult
to imagine life at all,” he said.
Sponsors of the campaign include: Transqual Logistics Training, Genesee & Wyoming, Northline,
Buslink and NT Road Transport Association.
