RLT Refuge Leadership Team APPLICATION Return this application along with all signatures to Rich OR another Refuge Staff member. Name: Grade: Address: Male / Female Shirt Size: Parents: Parent Phone: Contact Info: Home Phone: Student Cell: Best email: List all activities & extracurriculars that you will be involved in during the next year. i.e. sports, clubs, jobs, etc. AND foreseen time requirements for each (For example: Club Soccer - week nights practices from A until B and weekend tournaments typically once or twice a month.) Based upon the above list, do you think you are over-committing yourself if chosen for this team? Explain your answer. Look over the following three covenants. What is the one covenant you will most likely struggle with the most? Explain your answer. 1 of 5 SERVICE COVENANT: In Mark chapter 10 he said, 42"You know that in this world kings are tyrants, and officials lord it over the people beneath them. 43 But among you it should be quite different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. 45 For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many." Jesus is saying, if you want to lead, you’ve got to serve. Maybe your idea of being a student leader is to have others respond to your commands. Those feelings are totally understandable—that’s the image of leadership that you see all over the world. So Jesus’ words are quite shocking. If you want to follow the lead of Jesus, you’ll need to eventually develop the primary attitude that says, “Leadership is not about me. Leadership is about serving others.” A huge part of RLT is serving. We believe in servant leadership as the true model for all leaders. In RLT, we want Jesus to be the standard to which our leadership is held - he led by being a servant to the end. In applying, I express my wholehearted desire to... SERVE when I know I should. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:17 SERVE when my reputation might suffer. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 1 Corinthians 9:22 SERVE so my reputation does not improve. So when you give...pray...fast, do not do these things to be honored by men...they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6 SERVE so I am not bothered when I am treated like a servant. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord not men. Ephesians 6:7 SERVE not on my own terms. Each of you should not look only to your own interests, but also the interests of others. Philippians 2:4 SERVE in ways that are common. Anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward. Mark 9:41 SERVE when I have the freedom to do otherwise. Do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. Galatians 5:13 SERVE authentically. Be completely humble. Ephesians 4:2 SERVE like Jesus. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. Mark 10:45 By signing below, I understand that I am agreeing to hold myself and be held by others to this service covenant. Therefore, they must recognize there is naturally a higher standard of character and commitment applied to any member of RLT. Please read thoroughly through the following covenant agreement and pray about your motives for applying. The following commitments are not about just trying to be “good” or to borify (to create a word) meaning to “limit” your teenage experience as it may first appear. Many think of freedom as the ability to create your own meaning and purpose. Freedom is not so simple. In Christian life, freedom is not so much the absence of restrictions as it is finding the right restrictions - the truly liberating ones. Consider 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, For Christ’s love compels (or even constrains) us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. We then choose to let the love of Christ adjust us because he adjusted himself for us to save us. When you fall deeply in love, you want to please the beloved. Once you realize how Jesus changed for you and gave himself for you, you are not afraid of giving up your “freedom” and therefore finding your true freedom in Him. In applying, I express my wholehearted desire to... STRIVE to know and serve the Lord Jesus Christ as my first and ultimate love. LIVE publicly and privately in a manner that is consistent with my commitment to Christ and the relationship I have with Him. DEMONSTRATE true accountability in my walk with Christ by always being truthful, transparent, and authentic. GUARD what I watch, read, and listen to knowing that I bear the fruit of what I consume. HONOR God with my conduct in all relationships, including: • choosing sexual purity, modesty, and abstinence as my normal. • choosing to abstain from the use of alcohol and other illegal substances. In applying, I also submit to a two strike (for recurring offenses) policy as it relates to the character covenant. **What is the two strike policy? Think of it like this: It is two strikes and you are out. We love you enough to risk you hating us for a while. We know without question that no one is even remotely close to being perfect. And we all fall hard sometimes. The two strike policy is our attempt to uphold the integrity of the ministry but also grant RLT students the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. The desire of the Refuge Staff is to see students grow into all the leadership talents that God has gifted them with. One way to help this effectively happen is to learn the difference between cheap and costly grace. With the first strike/offense, you will be subject to a meeting with Rich and the Refuge Staff to discuss a plan of action which we plan on holding you accountable to. On the second strike for a recurring offense, you will have effectively forfeited your position in RLT. By signing below, I understand that I am agreeing to hold myself and be held by others to this character covenant. Signature: Date: 3 of 5 COMMITMENT COVENANT: One key factor in your growth as a well-rounded servant leader is your commitment to Christ, RLT, and VRBC. The best way to measure commitment is quality time. In Acts, we see the first Christian communities and leaders doing as much life together as they possibly could. This is the blueprint for RLT. We want to experience genuine Christian community with one another through quality time/commitment to community. In applying, I express my wholehearted desire to... MAINTAIN a consistent commitment to serving Christ, RLT, and VRBC by: Committing to do all I can to be present and active in all Sunday night gatherings each month AND **Participating in a monthly RLT meeting, from 4 to 5PM once a month. RLT meetings will typically be held on the 1st Sundays of every month (except on holiday weekends.)** **Why come to an RLT meeting? We know that the greatest way to reach our community is you. In RLT, we want to give you all, the students, a chance to pray and a chance to speak into and change the ministry that is here to help you (and all students in our community) grow into fully devoted Christ followers. We need you guys to come, speak up about what you like about Refuge and what you would do differently. We want to create time and space for you guys to dream about the future of Refuge and make those dreams happen. By signing below, I understand that I am agreeing to hold myself and be held by others to this commitment covenant.
