Define the Task
Cell Growth and Reproduction Test
Step 1: Determine the Initial DOK Level of the Task
What level?
Questions 1-26, 28, 29, 30 – Level 1
Questions 27 - :Level 2
Why? The level 1 questions have one right answer and students are being asked to recall information they have learned before. It is a primarily
a memory task. Question #27 is asking students to evaluate the information and make a judgment call and explain it. While answers are not
word for word considered right or wrong, there is a right concept to be explained. That has already been taught. Students are not generating
new knowledge.
Step 2: Identify the Standard(s) Addressed
X Essential □ Important
Standard - 3.1.B.A4: Summarize the stages of the cell cycle. Examine how interactions among the different molecules in the cell cause the distinct
stages of the cell cycle which can also be influenced by other signaling molecules. Explain the role of mitosis in the formation of new cells and its
importance in maintaining chromosome number during asexual reproduction.
Step 3: Adjust the DOK Level
X Yes □No
Normal cell growth occurs when all of the necessary components work together, but when signals fail, cell growth can cause
diseases like cancer to grow instead. Choose at least two ways in which cell growth can go awry and describe what can
result. Be creative, compare the growth (or failure to grow in a healthy way) to some other situation in order to help your
audience understand what is (or isn’t happening). Share this story using the media of your choice

Provide a blank/guided Flowchart with
both acceleration and failure to repair
damaged genes.
Provide websites as resources to access.
Provide list of ideas for comparison.
Suggest students create flowchart to
layout ideas.
Suggest articles from medical journals to
aid in information gathering.

Advanced Level
Choose a type of cancer and
describe how scientists believe the
failure of the cell to grow in a
healthy manner has resulted in that
disease. Using creative media,
replicate the sequence that results
in the disease and how it’s
currently being treated. Be sure to
explain how the treatment does (or
doesn’t) impact the healthy growth
of the cell.
Adrenal Cancer
Bladder Cancer
Bone Cancer
Breast Cancer
Provide a blank/guided Flowchart
Hodgkin
with both acceleration and failure
Leukemia (Choose one)
to repair damaged genes.
Liver cancer
Provide websites as resources to
Lung Cancer
access.
Skin Cancer (Basal and Squamous)
Provide list of ideas for comparison. Skin Cancer (Melanoma)
Choose one on your own
Most Challenging Level
You have been asked to brief a
group of investors who may want
to invest in your genetic research.
Describe your research and what
you intend to explore. Who might
be the most likely investors
interested in your research? Your
job is to educate the investors on
how the disease works, what your
idea is for promising research, and
what they have to gain by investing
in your work.
