ANZCA welcomes medical research investment
The announcement of boosted investment in the form of a Medical Research Future Fund was a
highlight in a tight 2014 federal budget, the president of the Australian and New Zealand College of
Anaesthetists said tonight.
Dr Genevieve Goulding welcomed the Australian Government’s promise to deliver funds to support
continued research focusing on the increasing economic and social burden associated with rising
rates of dementia.
“ANZCA has recognised the importance of understanding and addressing the numerous genetic and
environmental factors that are associated with the rise in our community of cognitive decline and
factors that may influence the progression of such conditions as dementia,” Dr Goulding said.
“We have significant research underway that examines elements, including the operating theatre
environment and the effect of anaesthesia itself, that may influence the quality of life of Australians.
“Our brain is our most important asset and it needs to be better protected. More research is needed
into identifying patients at risk of cognitive decline following anaesthesia and surgery, an area that is
especially important with our increasingly ageing population. Only then can we develop improved
strategies to guide good decision making and optimise outcomes.
“We welcome this announcement of further support for such critical areas of medical research.
Chronic disease and the disability associated with it are a major health concern and this is likely to
increase as our population ages. ”
