FRESH SEAFOOD DRAWS CROWDS FOR SFM’S ‘EASTER FEASTIVAL’
Monday, 31 March 2014
Sydney Fish Market (SFM) will open for extended trading hours from 5am – 5pm on Good Friday
to cater for visitors on what is historically, the market’s single busiest day of the year. Normal
trading hours will resume for the rest of the long weekend.
During the long weekend, approximately 50,000 people will flock to SFM’s ‘Easter Feastival’ and
will collectively purchase over 370 tonnes of seafood.
When picking up their holiday catch, families can enjoy entertainment including face painters and
a very special visit from the Easter Bunny on Good Friday. Visitors can capture their Easter
Feastival moments by uploading to Instagram or Twitter using the #SeafoodieEaster hashtag and
a free Polaroid style photo will be printed to a ‘Tag-n-Print’ box at the SFM site.
Sydney Fish Market general manager Bryan Skepper says there is nothing like the feeling of
getting amongst the action at the Easter Feastival.
“The buzz on Good Friday is contagious as visitors enjoy the atmosphere and pick up the
essentials for their Easter feasts. Fish holds special religious meaning for those that observe
Lent, but further to that, seafood is often the centrepiece at many Australian dining tables
throughout the long weekend.”
In addition to white fish for Good Friday, the most popular seafood species during the Easter
period are the beloved Aussie prawns and oysters with approximately 40 tonnes of Prawns and
20,000 dozen Oysters making their way from SFM to the plates of families around Sydney.
Sydney Fish Market supply manager Gus Dannoun, says retailers and fishers Australia-wide have
been preparing for the Easter season and there is a bountiful supply of fresh seafood options to
suit every budget.
Gus’ seafood recommendations for Easter 2014 include:
 Snapper, Barramundi and Yellowtail Kingfish tend to be the most popular white fish
options for Good Friday.
 Cooking a whole fish is a nice way to share an Easter Sunday meal with family or friends.
New Zealand King Salmon, Atlantic Salmon or Snapper are all good options for whole
cooking.
 Aussie Farmed Black Tiger Prawns and Sydney Rock Oysters are in plentiful supply and
are great for appetisers or nibbles at long-weekend barbeques and parties.

Lesser-known Australian seafood species such as Bonito, Cuttlefish, Mirror Dory, Sea
Mullet and Blue Mussels are all very affordable and great eating.
Seafoodies can also catch SFM’s ‘Sydney Seafood School on the Road’ free cooking
demonstrations with tastings at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Sydney Seafood School
demonstrator Brigid Treloar will be cooking up delicious cuttlefish and snapper recipes at the
Show from Thursday, 10 April until Wednesday, 23 April.
