PRESS RELEASE
‘Shuttle Time Nepal’
‘Shuttle Time Nepal’ is a new development through sport project which combines one of the most
popular sports across Asia, particularly in Nepal, with the growing need to support the recovery and
growth of the Nepalese community following the earthquakes of 2015.
The program aims to use the sport of Badminton to promote social inclusion, health and peacebuilding through the participation of primary school children across the small nation – particularly for
girls and people with disabilities – using sport and play to build resilience in children and supporting
ongoing efforts in basic education, disaster recovery and risk reduction, with the subsequent benefit of
increasing health-related behaviour through regular physical activity.
The project will facilitate the training of over 500 Primary School teachers across Nepal and, through
those teachers, deliver a 12 week Shuttle Time program that will reach over 20,000 primary school
children in more than 250 schools with the provision of badminton kits, teaching resources translated
to Nepalese, and training for 20 Tutors across the five regions of Nepal.
Shuttle Time Nepal’ is funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through
its Asian Sports Partnerships Program and will be managed by Badminton Australia in partnership
with the Nepal Badminton Association. Technical support and assistance is provided by the
Badminton World Federation (BWF), Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) and Sport Matters, an
Australian NGO specialising in sport for development.
The program will run until August with launch events in Nepal and Australia in February. Other key
events include capacity building activities in Kathmandu in February and July and a sports carnival to
commemorate the first anniversary of the Nepal earthquakes on 25 April.
