BAYOU CITY CONCERT MUSICAL’S CABARET THEATRE
Presents
“THE MUSIC OF JEROME KERN”
BAYOU CITY CONCERT MUSICALS 3RD ANNUAL CABARET THEATRE evening presents “THE
MUSIC OF JEROME KERN.” Due to popular demand, this musical evening has now been extended to
three consecutive Monday nights, March 12, March 19 and March 26, 7:30 p.m. at Ovations, 2536 Times
in the Village. The evening pays tribute to a composer who is generally known as the father of
American Musical Theatre.
Jerome Kern took the operetta style musical, which was so prevalent in the early 20th century, and from it,
created a foundation for the American style of musical comedy. Though his first musicals were short on
plot, the music was direct and real and filled with American energy and expressiveness, with songs such
as: “Look for the Silver Lining,” and “They Didn’t Believe Me.” Then came the musical, SHOWBOAT
in 1927, so unlike any musical that had come before. In collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II, who
wrote the book and lyrics, the songs of Kern illustrated each character and advanced the plot of the story.
SHOWBOAT was an American epic filled with joy and hardship on the Mississippi River.
Featuring a veritable Who’s Who of Houston musical theater talent, the music of Kern will come alive
again. “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Til The Clouds Roll By,” “Look For The Silver Lining,” and
“The Song is You,” are just a few of his songs that will be performed, and of course, the beloved music
from SHOWBOAT. Audiences will also be treated to some of the rediscovered gems from Kern’s early
work. The performers for the evening will be:
