Dr. Lamont Cavanagh
An assistant professor of family medicine at OUTulsa with a practice at Hillcrest Medical Center,
Cavanagh specializes in sports medicine and is well
versed at achieving physical success on land or in air.
Cavanagh served five years as an Air Force flight
surgeon and currently acts as chief of aerospace medicine for the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air
National Guard. Aerospace medicine maintains the
health, safety and performance of those involved in
air and space travel.
“It’s the physiology of high performance flying,”
says Cavanagh, a marathoner who regularly flies
F-16 fighter jets. “I take care of pilots and study how
environments such as excessive G-forces or hypoxic
conditions have an effect on the body, and with that
understanding we can help prevent accidents and

ensure more safety.”
An alumnus of the University of Oklahoma School
of Medicine, Cavanagh enjoys teaching and shares
his expertise with medical students and residents as
well as patients.
“I always encourage everyone to be active in some
way. Work with your doctor or a fitness instructor
to get started and create a training program where
you’re doing something you like,” he says. “Whether
you’re an elite professional, a weekend athlete or
wanting to go from walking around the block to
jogging 30 minutes, it’s important to make healthy
choices and have a plan.”
Cavanagh also serves as tournament physician for
the Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament and team physician for three universities in
Tulsa, Owasso High School and the Tulsa Drillers.

The Tulsa-based Eye Institute is a comprehensive eye care center
with a talented team of ophthalmologists, including Goldberg, who
specializes in cornea and external diseases and refractive surgery.
With 20 years of experience, Goldberg is a preferred surgeon for
patients seeking laser refractive or cataract surgery. He is an expert
in advanced small incision, no-stitch cataract surgery and enjoys
the challenges of his profession.
“I find diagnosing and treating infectious and immune mediated
diseases of the anterior segment of the eye most challenging and
interesting,” says Goldberg, a medical graduate of Duke University.
“The surgical aspect of my work, though, is what I enjoy most –
cataract, corneal and anterior segment (eye) surgery – both because
of the challenge of the techniques, and because of the often immediate positive impact these procedures can have on quality of
life for my patients.”
Goldberg serves as the active chief of the Ophthalmology Section at both St. John Medical Center and Hillcrest Medical Center.
He also participates in resident and student teaching at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine-Tulsa and the Oklahoma
State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“New technologies have made cataract procedures safer and
have helped our patients achieve better visual results,” he says.
“Cataract surgery has a very low complication rate; in fact cataract
surgery has one of the best safety profiles of any procedure in all of
surgery and medicine.” – Rebecca Fast

Dr. Charles Funderburk
Ten years after relocating to Oklahoma City from Florida, Funderburk
decided that he had finally become an “Okie.”
“Many things factor into that decision, including this being such a
wonderful place to raise children,” he says. “The Edmond/Oklahoma City
area provides tremendous resources for our family. We’re very pleased with
the educational possibilities that our children have and are continuing to
receive here,” he says.
As an orthopedic surgeon for the McBride Clinic, Inc., in OKC, Funderburk specializes in sports medicine, including arthroscopy to elbows,
knees, shoulders and wrists; joint reconstruction; knee replacements and
care of upper extremity injury.

With a history of professional service to Oklahoma sports, Funderburk is currently a consultant for OU and OSU athletics, the Oklahoma
Redhawks, the Oklahoma City Thunder as well as many athletes on the
Oklahoma high school level.
“I really enjoy the early gratification that I get to see with patients not
only returning to their functions after their surgical procedures, but being
able to function better,” he explains.
Funderburk has an extensive background in continuing medical education, presentations and research, and adds that he loves the fact that he gets
to work with medical students.
“I currently have a high school student shadowing my practice. This is
always refreshing and the questions these students ask certainly keep you
on your toes,” he says. – Meika Yates Hines

Dr. Kathleen O’Neil
As one of approximately 236 board certified rheumatologists in the
country, and one of two in Oklahoma, O’Neil has her hands full.
An asset to the Department of Pediatrics Division of Rheumatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, she specializes in medicine
that cares for people with inflammatory disease, autoimmune disease
and various forms of arthritis.
“There is quite a broad spectrum of diseases that we cover, and
I’ve cared for kids who have gone undiagnosed for years,” she says.
“Although some patients are short term, many become longitudinal relationships. That’s one of the things I enjoy the most about what
I do – getting to see them grow and develop and improve.”
While getting her start in general pediatrics on the East Coast,

O’Neil decided to pursue a subspecialty and focused on her interest
in immune system functionality after seeing families with both autoimmune and immune deficiency diseases.
Her fascination with the interplay between the two diseases helped
pave the way for many successful years of dedicated professional
practice, research and teaching of rheumatology.
“The new medications available for the diseases are wonderful.
Some meds will take children who are incredibly sick and make them
virtually normal again,” O’Neil explains.
“It’s different now than it was a few years ago. You can really
make these kids better. It’s something that I know I can really make
a difference doing and I love working with kids. They’re honest, fun,
direct, and they rarely ever fake it.” – Meika Yates Hines

Dr. Paul Callegari
Certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery, Callegari helps people of
all ages live more confident and physically functional lives. His extensive
training in plastic and reconstructive surgery has made his practice a
preferred choice by patients. He practices at Saint Francis Hospital and
SouthCrest Hospital.
According to Callegari, plastic surgery can include treating victims
of injury, cancer, birth deformities, burns, fractures of bones of the face
and hand and a variety of other problems. The diversity of his field is a
characteristic Callegari finds rewarding.
“Through my practice I have the opportunity to treat adults, children –
both men and women – and perform in- and outpatient procedures,” says

Callegari. “It’s especially rewarding to see a patient who has experienced
a traumatic injury and through the correct treatment regain the functional
use of their hand or other physical mobility.”
He also notes that those who choose to have elective cosmetic surgery
often feel less self-conscious and enjoy a renewed sense of confidence.
His list of procedures include surgeries involving the hand, ears, nose,
breast, brow and facelifts, scars, liposuction, tummy tucks and body
contouring.
Callegari is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the
American Medical Association and the American Association for Hand
Surgery. He is also a published author in plastic surgery journals and has
presented scientific papers at national meetings. – Rebecca Fast

your advice. But when you give talks on the community level, you
can influence the lives of dozens, if not hundreds, of people in one
sitting,” Owens explains.
A native of Panama, he also stays active with the Integris Latino
Health initiative and has many Spanish-speaking patients who drive
the extra miles from out of town to visit his family practice and learn
at his speaking forums.
“I enjoy the different perspectives of influence I can provide by
working on two different levels – giving talks to groups and the community as well as serving my own patients. As a family doctor, you
don’t just get to know your patients, but a lot of times, their children

Dr. Denise Rable
One year after joining what would soon become Norman Surgical Associates, Rable took the reins as Medical Director of the Norman Regional
Health Systems Breast Care Center upon its opening in 2000.
Board certified in general surgery, Rable has made it her mission to
ensure that women get appropriate breast evaluations with as much ease
as possible, whether for a routine annual exam or complex workup of a
suspicious finding.
“I am fortunate that the work I am passionate about is strongly supported by the health system in Norman,” she explains. “At our center,
we are able to offer comprehensive imaging services including digital
mammography, ultrasound, and stereotactic biopsy.”
On her watch, the center has incorporated a surgical clinic into the

breast care center and facilitates high priority on evaluation, diagnosis
and treatment.
Operating on women with both benign and malignant diseases, Rable
says that Norman Regional Hospital provides her with the tools and
resources to deliver state-of-the-art technology and interventions.
“With breast cancer, I find the process of evaluating each individual
patient’s situation and developing a surgical plan particularly rewarding,” she says.
“There is a lot of patient education involved. There are also so many
personal and emotional issues that the patients are working through, and
I appreciate their confidence and trust in me to help them through a very
difficult time. The residents of Norman and the surrounding cities are a
joy to meet and I feel privileged to care for them.” – Meika Yates Hines

Dr. Insung Kim
Growing older isn’t always an easy process – that’s why Kim’s expertise
can significantly impact the quality of life of today’s aging population.
As a specialist in geriatrics and internal medicine, Kim serves
patients at Warren Clinic as part of the Saint Francis Health System.
Trained at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Kim was
drawn to the medical complexities of working with older patients.
“I enjoy working with older adults and find their problems to be
significantly more challenging,” says Kim. “They are usually faced with
multiple chronic illnesses, so you’re not addressing a single issue or
organ system but instead you’re treating the whole person.”
Geriatricians manage health issues most often associated with aging

Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. is a healthcare
research and information company founded
in 1991 by a former medical college board
chairman and president to help guide
consumers to America’s top doctors and
top hospitals. Castle Connolly’s established
survey and research process, under the direction of an MD, involves tens of thousands
of top doctors and the medical leadership of
leading hospitals.
Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of
researchers follows a rigorous screening
process to select top doctors on both the
national and regional levels. Using mail and
telephone surveys, and electronic ballots,
they ask physicians and the medical leadership of leading hospitals to identify highly
skilled, exceptional doctors. Careful screening of doctors’ educational and professional
experience is essential before final selection
is made among those physicians most highly
regarded by their peers.
The result – we identify the top doctors in
America and provide you, the consumer,
with detailed information about their education, training and special expertise in our
paperback guides, national and regional
magazine “Top Doctors” features and online
directories.
Doctors do not and cannot pay to be

Kim points out that everyone ages at a different rate based on genetic
or lifestyle-driven health problems. If a person is dealing with several
health issues at once and it’s affecting their quality of life, then they may
benefit from a geriatric evaluation.
“Geriatricians can be a resource for patients as well as family members when considering the options of long-term care,” says Kim. “We
way the risks and benefits to medical care and help choose the plan that
will provide the best quality of life and physical independence for the
patient.” – Rebecca Fast
