• Niki Gumbell – Anglican Minister – started
the Alpha course as an effort to reach non
Christians – initially for his own church
• Alpha course - seeks to introduce the
basics of the Christian faith through a
series of talks and discussions – talks are
either live or via video (DVD)
• running in 169 countries and 112
languages, with over 27 million people
having taken the course (2015)

• The Alpha Course is now used in a wide
variety of denominational settings
• While some view the
Pentecostal/Charismatic emphasis of the
course as problematic, it is widely used in
evangelical and Roman Catholic settings

• Younger and newer classical Pentecostal
scholars have emerged
• Provide a fresh approach
• Much higher level of academic scholastic

Explosion of Chinese Christianity
• During the 1980s & 1990s the church in China
multiplied through the underground house church
movement
• Many of these groups were Pentecostal in
experience if not overtly in doctrine
• Now with the “new openness” in China they are
establishing churches and other ministries in the
open
• Still much opposition within China, but many brave
Chinese are becoming more open about their faith
and the Christian church continues to grow
exponentially

Hillsong Church Transition to Church
Planting
• Hillsong became known through dynamic worship
music and concerts
• However, behind the music is a vibrant and
energetic classical Pentecostal church (Christian
Churches of Australia – AG)
• The new emphasis is on church planting – with very
visible plants in New York, Europe and other
prominent locations.

Bethel Church, Redding, California – “Jesus
Culture”
• Jesus Culture became known through dynamic
worship music and concerts
• Started as an Assemblies of God church in 1954
but withdrew from the Assemblies in 2006
nondenominational
• Pastor Bill Johnson called to the church in 1996 –
stipulated that the message would always be
about revival and that the message would never
change

Bethel Church, Redding, California – “Jesus
Culture”
• Revival broke out shortly after Pastor Johnson’s
arrival – many manifestations, some controversy
• 1998 established the Bethel School of
Supernatural Ministry
• Bethel Music and Jesus Culture are ministries of
Bethel – huge impact in Christian music

• Finish answering the questions in the Guide for
the chapters and sections above (to be
submitted for grading)
• Choose a person who had a significant impact
on Canadian Pentecostal History and write your
research paper.
• Final Exam and Paper Due April 1
