Assignment: Two Concert Performance Reviews
given Monday, October 21, 2013
Mr. A. Klassen (667-8210, ext. 5002, [email protected])
Rationale
Observing the performances of high quality instrumentalists is essential when learning how to play your
instrument and perform music. Listening to characteristic sounds of instrumentalists, ensembles, and
repertoire will give you a better idea of the sound that you are trying to produce on your own instrument
and within our band. Watching great musicians as they play in public is equally valuable in discovering
how to get the best out of your own performances.
Description
To further this goal, you are asked to attend and review TWO instrumental concert performances
throughout the school year. Both performances should be of a higher caliber of musicianship than that
normally achieved at a Grade 8 level - ie. a high school, university or professional level soloist or
ensemble. The due dates for these two Concert Performance Reviews are: by Friday, January 31, and by
Wednesday, June 11.

Alternative Assignment
If circumstances warrant and permission is given by me, you might be allowed to review a video or audio
recording of a live concert performance. Talk to me well in advance of either due date if you think this
alternative might be necessary.
Choir/Band Overlap Requirement
The Grade 8 Choir has been given this same assignment. Band members who are also members of the
Grade 8 Choir are only required to do a total of two Concert Performance Review Assignments. One of
these should be instrumental and handed in to me, the other choral and handed in to Mr. Toews. Whatever
mark you receive for each assignment will be applied to your mark for both courses. When handing in the
choral review to Mr. Toews, please also give me a note or email that you have done so, so that I can ask
Mr. Toews for the mark. When handing in the instrumental review to me, give Mr. Toews a note.
Questions / Individual Help
If you have questions or concerns about this assignment, or would appreciate individual help either in
selecting a concert performance to review, or in how to review the performance, please see me or email
me well in advance of either due date.
Good luck!
Mr. K.
