What are some of the reasons why the Southern black population has hit its highest point in 50
years? Younger and more educated black residents move out of declining cities in
the Northeast and Midwest in search of better opportunities.
2.
In what way has this population growth “upended some long-held assumptions,” according to the
article?
3.
What was the Great Migration, and how does it relate to the current demographic shift?
Great Migration, a long-term movement of African Americans from the South to
the urban North, transformed Chicago and other northern cities between 1916 and
1970. Now blacks are moving from the North to the South.
4.

Some reasons why people interviewed for this article because they feel that Atlanta is a
place where some people can have a refresher to hopeful it will be in a black middle class
community.
5. How does the changing population in the West compare to the North and South, according to the
article? More people from the north were coming to the south for a refresher and
better opportunites. Rather than people the people who stayed in the west.
6. How, if at all, do you think this new migration might impact the black cultural traditions of both
Northern and Southern cities? I believe by the African Americans who once lived in
south and moved to the north and now moving back to the south. I feel that its

South.
Collins Writing
“It gave voice to Shirley Chisholm, refuge to Malcolm X, legs to Althea Gibson and opportunity to Jackie
Robinson. It was the incubator of the Harlem Renaissance, the proving ground of jazz and the birthplace of
hip-hop.
It was a black Mecca and magnet. Was.”
What are Mr. Price and Mr. Blow lamenting? Why do you think geography is often a key part of culture
and heritage?
__ 7 lines
__Give 3 examples from the article outside of the quote why Harlem was important
___ Explain 3 examples of how geography can be a key part of culture and heritage
I believe that Mr. Price and Mr. Blow are mourning because there was a lot of history
that took place in Harlem during the Great Migration when blacks was moving to the
North from the south for better opportunities. Also , they were sad because it used
to be a time where blacks came together and tried to do different things to get them
through this trying time in society which they wasn’t yet accepted. Now that its not
like that anymore that is affecting the people who once had a part in history. As far
as the place that they live is a big impact because of what happen at before.
