He/she will take notes on the government’s use of propaganda to influence women’s participation in the wartime effort. Then, the learner will create a propaganda poster that would influence women during WWII to participate in the wartime effort. TEKS/Standards: History 2 (A): Identify the major characteristics that define a historical era. History 7 (G): Explain the home front and how American patriotism inspired exceptional actions by citizens and military personnel, including high levels of military enlistment; volunteerism; the purchase of war bonds; Victory Gardens; the bravery and contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, the Flying Tigers, and the Navajo Code Talkers; and opportunities and obstacles for women and ethnic minorities. WARM-UP/ Anticipatory Set Title: Venn Diagram Venn Diagram: Compare & Contrast women’s societal roles for pre & post WWII. Objective(s): The learner will brainstorm women’s societal roles for pre & post WWII and create a Venn Diagram. I will lead the diagram on white board and call on students randomly to fill in sections of the diagram Key ?’s: What are the differences between women’s roles pre & post WWII? Are there any similarities? When did the switch occur? Why? What prompted or influenced public opinion? Objective(s): The learner will acquire information about the wartime effort of women by taking notes and examining three examples of propaganda. Teacher Procedures: I will lead notes over the home front effort during WWII using a PPT. Materials Students: Piece of Paper Writing Utensil Teacher: White board, Expo Markers 10 minutes II. LESSON 1st Activity Title: Notes Materials: Note packet Writing utensil 15 minutes Student Procedures: The student will take notes over the home front effort during WWII. Additionally, students will make inferences about three propaganda images aimed towards women during WWII. Key ?’s: How was the propaganda affective? Are we still exposed to propaganda today? Are there any similarities between propaganda during WWII & modern day advertisements? What are these examples of propaganda trying to articulate? Teacher: A. Dejournett Teacher: Sarah Regalado Campus: Killeen High School Objective(s): The student will create a propaganda poster influencing WWII women to participate in war time efforts. (WACS, WASPS, Factory Workers, Victory Gardens, etc.) Teacher Procedures: I will display several examples of WWII propaganda, distribute the rubric, and circulate the room to ensure class participation/answer any questions that may arise. Student Procedures: The students will create a propaganda poster based on information/examples they learned about in the lesson. Key ?’s: What images or words would provoke change and encourage women to participate in the wartime effort? What can you include in your poster to provoke a specific emotion from your audience? Objective(s): The learner will brainstorm what happened to women’s roles in society when the men came back from war. Teacher Procedures: I will give “T chart” instructions and offer several question stems to encourage critical thinking. Student Procedures: Students will create a “T chart” that compares women’s roles in society that were new during WWII and remained after the war, to roles that didn’t remain after the men returned home from war. Key ?’s: Did women’s roles change after men returned home from war? What ideas about women remained? What ideas continue to remain today? Student Procedures: Engage in classroom discussion Teacher Procedures: I will encourage students to reflect on their understanding of propaganda during WWII by randomly calling on specific students to answer critical thinking questions. Key ?’s: What did we learn today? How did propaganda influence women during WWII? Is propaganda still relevant today? Are women’s roles still influenced by modern day propaganda? Planned Modifications and Differentiation: (ILL/504/SpEd accommodations) 5th period is my inclusion class; therefore we have an inclusion teacher to help those with specific needs. I will provide instructions both orally and visually. Assessment(s): (attach copies of assessment documents, criteria and rubrics for grading) Student’s propaganda creation will demonstrate students’ understanding of the persuasive words and images that encouraged women to participate in WWII efforts.
