2014-15 STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN CHINA
SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY
SEPTEMBER 2015 – JULY 2016 (NEW!)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at
California State University, Long Beach, will offer a yearlong international exchange program at Shanghai
International Studies University (SISU), Shanghai, China. Shanghai is the largest city by population in China and the
largest city proper by population in the world. It is a global city and major financial center in China with influence in
commerce, culture, finance, media, fashion, technology, and transport. It is also a popular tourist destination for its
historical landmarks such the Bund, City God Temple and Yu Garden. It has been described as the “showpiece” of
the booming economy of mainland China.
In addition to an intensive Chinese language program, CSULB students can also enroll in free-charged elective
courses that include Chinese calligraphy, Chinese Modern History, Modern Literature, Chinese-Foreign Exchange
History, and E-Business, among others. Since the Chinese courses are quite rigorous at SISU, applicants should have
completed CHIN202 prior to going to Shanghai, or acquired equivalent proficiency in Chinese. Students who have
(near) native fluency in Chinese may take regular courses offered in Chinese at SISU.
Because SISU has subsidized housing at SISU Hotel for all international students, CSULB students will be able to
live and study in Shanghai with substantial savings.
