From 1997-2013, there were 3351 unintentional poisoning deaths. Unintentional poisoning deaths
made up 27.4% of all unintentional deaths in Dallas County. The number of deaths has increased 4 fold
over this time period. The increase in unintentional poisoning deaths is statistically significant.

Historically, motor vehicle occupant deaths were the leading cause of unintentional deaths in Dallas
County. After 2003, the number of motor vehicle deaths began to decline as unintentional poisoning
deaths started to increase.

Overall, 72% of the victims were males. The death rate per 100,000 population for males has increased
almost 3 fold from 1997 to 2013. For, females the death rate has increased over 5 fold during the same
time period.

Fifty-four percent of the deaths were white, followed African Americans, Hispanic and other. The death
rate per 100,000 population indicates that the White population death rate has increase almost 6 fold
and the African American population by 4 fold. The increase in unintentional poisoning deaths for
whites and African Americans are statistically significant.

Age Group
The average age of an unintentional poisoning victim was 40 years, and the age ranged from 0 years to
108 years. The majority of the deaths occurred among ages 35-54. The highest death rates per 100,000
population were among persons 40-54 years of age.

Age Group
There is a different age profile of unintentional poisoning deaths by race. For the white population, the
highest death rate was in the 20-24 age group and peaks again among persons 45-49 years of age. In
the African American population, the highest death rate started at a later age than whites; the highest
death rate among African Americans was in ages 50-54. Among the Hispanic population, the highest
death rate peaked at ages 20-24.
